Electric seat fore and aft movement - or lack of it !

Postby maineman1963 » Sun Jun 30, 2013 5:52 pm

Hia first post for me...
Have a 2008, 58 plate XF 2.7D PL. Driver's seat will no longer move fore and aft..every other electrical movement is fine. Memory seat does not move it between what was set for myself and wife. Before I look at the third party warranty it has I wondered if this is a common fault...have heard rumours that it might be. Any suggestions on a cure, and is it DIY as struggling to get car booked in currently re commitments.

Driver’s Seat Restricted Movement.
My wife drove the car, then a couple of days later, I got in and pressed the memory button to move the seat back to my stored position. The seat moved back a few millimetres and stopped, well short of my normal position. The seat would move fore and aft on the switch, but would not go back far enough. I found a dropped coin had jammed the mechanism, but even when removed, the seat seemed to have memorised that as the new limit! I tried pulling the seat fuses, and when that didn’t work, disconnected the battery for an hour, but still no change.
Whilst still fiddling with the seat switches just after reconnecting the battery for a second time, I selected the switch to move the seat aft, but nothing moved, so just to check power, I simultaneously selected the recline switch: bingo; not only did the seat recline, but the seat moved aft to the full aft limit. It now works normally and it seems pressing both switches together can reset the system.
Hope this helps anyone else and saves an expensive visit to the garage for a computer reset.
First Jag was an LPG X308 XJ8; now have an XF 3.0D. I enjoy doing my own maintenance.
