Mirror Fold / Unfold Problem

My 13 plate XF's mirror fold / unfold has intermittent fault on driver's door. It (and pax door mirror) will fold/ unfold using the internal switches and when opening the car on any of the other doors with any of the other doors from locked. Remote key sets and unsets alarm but driver's door mirror stays in its folded or unfolded position. Ideas ?

Several suggestions jump to mind. Bearing in mind the intermittent nature of the issue, a good old-fashioned earthing issue could be involved. Cleaning any earths common to both sides would be the way to rule the possibility in or out. The problem could also be a wiring issue which could be difficult to diagnose without suitably sensitive kit in the hands of a skilled operator. Many related functions, like the locking/mirrors are routed via modules like the keyless entry processing module and it would make sense to ensure there are no signs of physical or water damage to the unit which lives in the boot. However before delving too deeply, if you haven't already done so, it would be worthwhile resetting the command to automatically fold the mirrors via the touchscreen vehicle settings; turn it off and then back on again. The system may be losing the setting due to voltage spikes of some sort, even due to a battery which is perfectly capable of starting the car but still past its best. During these times of lockdowns and periods of inactivity, this is probably the most likely suspect. Mike.
