Jaguar XF 2012 no offside head light dip OK

Hi My XF 2012 has just failed it MOT due to the front of side headlight wont work on full beam; it is OK on dip. The near side functions correctly. The garage wants to replace the whole offside light cluster unit. Is there any cheaper alternative action?
Has anybody seen this problem?

Xenon headlamps are very expensive to buy new so it's important to ensure a correct diagnosis before rushing to buy a replacement. Not knowing if there is any obvious physical damage present, my suggestion would be to temporarily swap over the good headlamp to the wiring on the 'bad' side of the car. If it still works correctly, you may require either a new ballast unit (most likely option) or a new headlamp. If the good unit doesn't work on the 'bad' side, the issue may be wiring-related. The only individual headlamp spare parts available from Jaguar are the burner (bulb) and the ballast unit. Mike.

Thanks Mike for your suggestions. As I need the car back on the road I have bit the bullet and purchased a second-hand unit from Eurojag. Have looked at few video's on iTunes on removing the lamp cluster it looks unbelievably complex; even to the point of having to remove part of the bumper. So I shall plug the replacement in to the connector and hopefully it works. Then I can investigate the old faulty unit at a later date, in the better weather. If it's not the problem I will have to investigate further. I have read that on the diesel version(which my car is ) that there are two separate delays for left and right that switches the high beam mode. But don't know the relay numbers, I have CD manual; but I cannot find the relays in it or in the car manual.
Hopefully I don't need to go that far. Thank you for your help.

The outcome from the full been problem was that the replacement of the light cluster rectified the fault. And the car has now passed the MOT. I shall investigate the old unit in the better weather. Rolyh

It's good the lamp is back working again. When the time comes, it will be interesting to learn what you find inside the old one. Mike.
