Windscreen washers

Postby rosemary » Sat Jan 28, 2023 10:41 pm

My windscreen washers have suddenly stopped working. The tank is full but no joy. Can't find a fuse associated with it so what's the problem. Help would be appreciated.

Can you hear the washer motor running? It will be on a fused supply, possibly with something else, not sure on an 09 XF, should be listed in the handbook somewhere. If there is silence and the fuse is ok, then either the switch or the washer motor at fault, can you check the connections to the motor as more likely to be there than the switch?

X300 XJ6 1997 The screen washer stopped working on the passenger side. The feed pipe sprays water when disconnected from the jets which do not appear blocked when probed. Does the electrical connection to the jets operate a valve which could be failing to open?

Nothing as fancy as that I’m sure. Pipe must be kinked at some point from outlet of motor to the jets. Are you sure they are not blocked? Fuse wire is best thing to poke into them as it will get a bit further in than, say, a pin.

Hello Folks
Haven't been on for a while but my problem is solved.
I decided to get a replacement pump before having a look myself cost £17.43p from an alternative supplier as against you know who's price of mega bucks. No fuse failures even if I could find one so I thought if it was driven as an adjunct to the Wiper Fuse, the motor might be burnt out. Dismantled what was needed to be removed to get to the tank and pump with the help of You Tube. Namely wheel and wheel arch liner.
There was the pump. pulled it out of the hole in the tank expecting water to drain out. No water. Looked closer and found the tank blocked with mud, a good pint or so. Now I've always used Screen wash purchased from the usual suppliers and never used straight water, so how all this mud got in the tank is unknown. Checking the motor and as suspected it was burnt out.
Happy days

Did you make sure that there is not an ingress point for road dirt to get into the water bottle? Strange it should contain mud and you have always used only screen wash fluids.

Yes I checked the tank and it is ok no cracks or loose joints. A mystery.

I"ve really thought about this and two and two make a very convenient solution, namely this car has been serviced by a Main Dealer since purchased under a maintenance agreement and this year was the end of that arrangement. Nothing has ever in all that time has caused any concern. Suddenly this has happened,
You can only draw your own conclusions.
