Hello all
I am toying with the idea of re mapping my xk 8
Rightly or wrongly !!!
Is it a good idea or should I just forget the whole thing
And does any body you can recommend in the Farnham/Surrey area
Many thanks

Re: Remapping
Tom Lenthall Jaguar at Finchampstead keep Gerald Morton of Berkshire Viezu in a broom cupboard! Gerald originally worked with Paul Busby at Paramount Performance in Slough. They remapped my old V8 S-type to great effect....effectively releasing what felt like having another cylinder bolted on at the front! Real quick silver power delivery which transforms the normal lethargic engine response.
Paramount then moved up North with Paul then setting up Viezu with Gerald`s assistance. Gerald wanted to continue to live in the Reading area so created Viezu Berkshire as a franchise with all the full Viezu back up and support structure available from the main Viezu HQ. As soon as I acquired my XJR and learned Gerald was in operation at Tom`s workshop, I was up there like a shot to have the XJR remapped. Happy days indeed because that car mod was as successful as the S-type. Phone Gerald on 07765 241174 or go via Toms web site. Mention my name please.
Remaps are fun. Transforms the car from a slug to a rocket. Bravo to Viezu.

Re: Remapping
ybur, is yours a 4.0 or 4.2 as I believe there is little that can be done with the 4.0

Re: Remapping
My old S-type was a 4 litre. Believe me when I say there is loads of extra grunt available from that engine. I had a simple spec. Modified Miltek cats back, resonator-less exhaust, K&N filter and a Gerald Morton/Paramount Performance remap. That got me around another 50hp which transformed the car. Mapping was done via the OBD port and took only about twenty minutes.
NOTE THE FOLLOWING ABOUT ALL 4.2 naturally aspirated or supercharged mapping. There are two types of ECU fitted randomly to XKR, X350R and S-type R. One is read only, the other is read and write. Read and write are programmable via the OBD port...quick and easy. The read only units are a tad more difficult to deal with because the ECU has to be removed from the car and taken to the bench. There, the outer case is removed and read electrical cable ribbons are soldered onto the PC board. The program is grabbed by Geralds magic box and sent electronically to Viezue. Half an hour later, Gerald gets a phone call from Viezu. Viezu send a modified version of the original software electronically to Geralds magic box. Gerald unsolders the read ribbons and the solders on write ribbons. Once again the magic box is involved which reloads the modified software back onto the ECU PC board. Gerald then unsolders his write ribbon. On goes the case again and the ECU is put back in the car. Job done. There is no way of knowing which type of ECU is fitted to your car before Gerald plugs his PC into the car via an OBD cable. Charges are the same which ever type of ECU is fitted to your car. Expect to pay around £500 for a remap.
Tom Lenthall was offering a package deal on ECU and the quick fit 6% smaller supercharger pulley conversion a few months ago. That makes a good Stage 1 type conversion for both 4 litre and 4.2 litre engines. You can go further with tuning the V8 units as desire and funds allow.

Re: Remapping
Interesting stuff Mike, thank you
I wonder if the 4.0 S-Type has a different ECU to the XK8? I only say this because a couple of years ago there was much debate amongst an XK club I used to belong to whether the 4-litre could be remapped or not and most authorities, Independents and specialists said not. I note that Viezu do not include the X100 4.0 on their remap list but do the 4.2, yet they do list the 4.0 S-Type - hence my puzzlement

Re: Remapping
That might be just a listings error, Peter.
The XK8 and V8 4 litre ECU`s will definately be different. S-type has always been drive by wire, whereas the 96-2003/4 (Prior to the 4.2 introduction) had I believe conventional Bowden cable throttle plate control. That early XK version used almost if not exactly the same engine configuration as the X308. I think the engines were directly inter-changable.
I believe Viezu, formerly Paramount Performance, at one time said they couldn`t remap the 4.2. I found that strange as Gerald had just remapped my X350R under his own Viezu Berkeshire franchise company banner working out of Tom`s emporium in Finchampstead. As said, its useful for 4.2 owners to know that the read and also the read and write ECU types figure widely over all Jaguars of the period ie S-type, XK8, X350 and early 4.2XF. Gerald told me there was no rhyme or reason as to what ECU turned up at his workshop or was it VIN dependent in any logical sequence. Gerald said it was quite conceivable that two consecutively VIN numbered cars could turn up with him at the same time. In one he might find an R and in the other it could be R&W. Some days he goes home early because the two cars a day that he might be working on have both been R&W. The next day he might get two cars with just R. In that case he can`t pick the kids up from school as he is working late! Gerald is a great bloke and I once had Tom, Gerald and Adam to come and visit the Portsmouth Region. We had a great evening...boy do those guys know how to drink beer. Makes Rob`s efforts look very sad!
