Just to add to the conversation I have a 2.7TDI S-Type MY 2005 now with 132,000miles a substantial proportion of which spent towing a 1456Kg MIRO (Mass in Running Order) Caravan to Holland and France over a few years. The only real problems I have had arose from the sub-standard cooling water pipe between the pre heater and the control valve which rusted through probably being exposed to road debris beneath the radiator, the heater control valve again rusted through causing the Control Unit to burn out, this time caused by spillage when refilling the windscreen washer bottle over the years. The only real major problem was a failure of the Torque Convertor/Gearbox at 80,000 miles, towing comes to mind. Its worth noting that two main dealers were unable to diagnose this fault until Jaguar themselves became involved. They, the Dealers, caused me heavy unnecessary expense basically guessing, a point Mike makes, what was wrong.
The car has been serviced as per the schedule and renewable items changed as required although the original gearbox oil was never changed.
I am having the new gearbox oil changed at the next service although I now use an XF to do the towing currently, at 60,000 miles now it also is having an oil change at it's next service. I regularly use my S-Type, in some ways I prefer it to the XF. The battery in the S-Type is stamped 03/05 (March 2005, my car registered May 2005), now renewed with a Bosch unit 4 months ago curing a few spurious alarms following advice from Mike. My car does not have a DPC and thus has the curved down exhaust pipes. To conclude I have enjoyed ownership of this car and continue to do so.

Update and the final result

I will not be buying the car, I have not even been to take a look at it because the owner had a rethink and decided it was worth much more than the price we were talking about, something of a disappointment after all the interest shown, some good some not so good all of it helpful and much more than I had expected I have to say, but thank you all very much indeed.

Best regards and happy Christmas everyone.

Stan.
