Viscous fan coupling

Does anyone know how to test a coupling 'off' the car? I am told I need a new one, Mine spins 4 to 5 revolutions when the engine is cold (I didn't get chance to try when the engine was hot) the engine boiled in a traffic queue so do I buy new or secondhand (how can I tell it's ok before fitting?)?
