Expansion tank level

Postby david340 » Fri Feb 03, 2012 11:37 pm

Hello all,

Due to pick up my 4.2 Sovereign Coupe on Sunday night, weather permitting !

When I checked the car over I noticed that the expansion tank on the wing was empty of fluid. Engine was warm and had run so im not sure if the tank would fill back up as the car cooled.

Just seeking advice on the level that the tank should be topped up to when cold, so I can get the level correct and keep a check for fluid loss.

Apologies for asking such a basic question !

Regards.

Dave

I think filling it to the base of the filler neck is recommended but the manual goes on to say that any excess will be ejected.

My recollection (haven't had a SII for a while now) is that mine would stabilise somewhere below the neck bottom and really needed checking with a length of dowel or similar, used like a dip stick.

I preferred to open the plain cap on the engine (only after overnight cool down.) If this was up to the top, then all was well.

Thanks for that, much appreciated.

My understanding is that a "pressure cap" is fitted on the expansion tank and a plain "non pressure" cap is fitted on the engine.

Will check and top up as required then at least I can monitor the level.

Checked the car on a 4 poster left and no signs of leaks and temp level is fine.

Cheers.

Dave.
