series 2 --4.2 fuel and ignition issues

Hi, just need some advice please on fuel and Ignition timing
Just need to know the type of fuel to use. The car was laid up in 1995 by my uncle when if failed its MOT. So fuel wise it used leaded 4 star up until then. I bought it off him in 2006 and have been getting it roadworthy ever since. Now, I have been using 99 ron from tesco and adding lead addictive.
Question is do I need addictive. can I use lower octane fuel.
also the timing is set at 8degrees BTC. is this correct for the fuel used, also would the engine run hot if this was'nt correct
