Fuel and electrical gremlins.

Thank you to those who replied to my initial questions. If possible can anyone help with the following niggles. (1) Although the engine runs well, I seem to have a fuel starvation problem when I use the R/H tank. Instead of pumping fuel to the engine, it pumps it back out through the R/H filler cap and down the top of the wing. Is this a blockage in the switchover pipes? My car was laid up for over 10 years and although I've treated it with Redex I suspect that it could be sediment from the bottom of the tank. (2) The drivers window became erratic in it's operation and then stopped working. The F/N/S is fine. At the same time there is a loud 'clicking' noise coming from behind the fusebox on the passenger side below the glovebox. The clicks come in 2 second intervals and sound like the indicator although these are fine. Is this connected to the faulty window or indeed is it connected to the fuel pump? I tried cleaning the switch in the console with switch cleaner but to no avail. I don't mind buying another switch but would like to be sure before I do so. Any advice would be welcome as electrics are my particular weakness. (3) Finally, I've also noticed that my fuel pump seems to hum quite loudly, easily audible in the cabin. Is this usual? I look forward to getting out and about this summer in the Daimler and meeting some of you all at shows. I'll also try to attend a couple of the club meets here in Cheshire. Regards, Steve Mac

Sorry to say but I've forgotten which car you have?
Assuming it's a SIII, then the fuel overflow problem is possibly down to the changeover valve. The default state for the valve (with power off) is to feed from the left tank and return to the left. Switching to right tank powers all three valves (left return closes, right return opens and the left/right selector opens the right hand fuel feed.)
By the sound of it you are continuing to feed from the left and the extra fuel is being returned to the right which will eventually overflow. If you can remove the valve and soak it in solvent, you may be able to persuade it back to life.
Noisy fuel pumps aren't uncommon and some report good results from foam insulating material placed around or under, but it might be worth removing the fuel filter and checking it is not blocked and also making sure that the inlet to the pump is free from debris.
Window lift switches on the SIII are less reliable than their SII predecessors. If it is the switch, changing it with one of the others should prove this quite quickly. It can also be a misaligned window glass, old, hardened grease on the lift mechanism or something else altogether. There is a thermal cutout in the system but my memory of exactly where is a hazy and I am away from the books at the moment.

thermal cut outs for windows are behind lower dash trim on passenger side. tessimont by replacing with 20-30 amp fuse. window switches are poor but easily changed. usde silicon spray on window rubber channels not wd40 as that will make it slower when it dries! al is correct about fault on changeover and return valves for fuel. I did have noisy pump and this was actually dying but got replacement for 36 quid via shop on ebay 18months ago and it still works great. If weather same up there as it is in oxford you may as well stay in garage and sort these niggles! good luck

To almcl & simon 4253, thank you both very much for your assistance. I shall be acting on the advice over the next few days. almcl, my car is a Daimler series 111 Sovereign. ( V reg, registered 010180.) It's quite an early one with the dash similar to the series 11. Clearly you are Daimler enthusiast to have two of these bueaties. I've never driven a V12 and hope to do so some day soon. By repute they are better than the Rolls Royce. simon4253, your list of cars makes me feel quite reasonable. I've shown it to my good wife to show her how reasonable I am. I only have 4 at present. 2 x Mercedes W123's a coupe and an estate, my Daimler and a Mazda MX 5 1991 for everyday use. I soon hope to take full ownership of a 1949 Riley RMC roadster though. This has always been a dream car for me and hopefully this dream will soon come to fruition. I see that you like Triumphs as well as Jaguars. I have had 3 Triumph 2000's, all MK 11s, as well as 1972 PI. I loved them dearly and my pal who is also my main mechanic for the stuff I can't do is fanatical about them. He is in the Triumph 2000 Register and is called John Locking. You may perchance have heard of him? He came with me to look over the Daimler to ensure that I wasn't wearing any rose tinted spectacles. He likes the Jags, but reckons the Triumphs are better. He is however slightly biased. Thanks once again gents for the advice. Don't be suprised if I'm back on soon with more queries. Forums like this are ideal as they can save a chap hours of fruitless messing by pinpointing a problem right away. Regards, Steve Mac.
