Can I Replace internal pumps on 77 XJ6 DIY??

Hi Folks
I am trying to find any info on how to replace internal fuel pump on a 77 XJC, but nothing on Google so far!
Has anyone done this themselves or is it a specialist job, please, anyone??

The usual safety warnings apply when working with fuel. Disconnect the battery first and jack up/support the rear of the car to enable the wheels to be removed safely.
The submerged fuel pumps are accessed via the circular covers found on the vertical faces of the rear wheel arches, after removing the rear wheels. You will need to empty the fuel tank being worked on. If the large lower tank covers have been removed previously, the factory fitted covers below the tank drains will be missing and that will make reaching the tank drain a task simple. Check and clean the tank filter whilst you finish draining any fuel. Alternatively, if the tank is not already empty, first remove whichever lower tank cover you need to, and again, drain the tank via the exposed tank drain. A less recommended option would be: run the contents of the tank down until it can run out whilst idling (avoid running a tank out on the road and causing backfiring, apart from drawing any dirt into the fuel lines, backfiring can harm gaskets etc). Next, remove the circular cover. The fixings will probably be corroded, so be patient! Slide the circular cover along the flexible hose to enable you to access and remove the electrical connections now visible, before unscrewing the pump itself from the tank. Mike.

DONE ! Easy job to do, as Mike kindly explains in previous reply, I got it a bit late and had already tackled it myself with help from the parts book! the tricky bit was the retaining ring that holds the pump in the tank, the ring is a bit smaller than the housing so when one taps the ring tight using one of the 3 lugs, it tends to push the ring to that side, pulling it out of the opposite clamped area that the ring locks into. you have to jiggle it til it is central and dont be too greedy trying to get it knocked in to tightly.
