S1 auxiliary cold start carb

Postby petersharvey » Fri Mar 08, 2013 4:27 pm

I have a S1 with the twin SU HD8 with the auxiliary starting carb. This has two electrical contacts. How do these get wired up (including the thermostat switch on the manifold. I can't find anything in any of the manuals which shows what is mean to go where including the service manual.

Any help gratefully received

Peter,
Am looking at the wiring diagram for 4.2 XJ6 Series 1

The supply starts at fuse No1 (cable colour green) and goes to W1 on horn relay, splits at this point and carries on to the Choke Solenoid ( still green ) Does not matter which connecter on the solenoid it is connected too, which ever is the tidier. From the other contact on the Choke Solenoid a green wire with pink trace goes straight to the Thermal Otter Switch then of course internally earthed.

In the olden days it was common pratice to run a twin core wire from the otter switch back into the cabin with an on/off switch. Although the Auxiliary Carb always allowed the engine to start, more often than not the engine would choke it's self to death by over fuelling if you dared leave the car to say shut the garage door.

Hope that helps
