Rattling noise from the back seat region

When I close the doors of my XJ6 series 2 I have a quite loud rattling noise from the back of the car. I remember that I have read that it could be the flap to the exit ventilator. Anybody out there who has any ideas how to fix this annoying sound?

The infamous 'cowbells'.

There are a series of metal flaps between the rear of the pax compartment and the boot. When built, these are covered with fabric similar, if not identical, to the headlining. Over time this degrades and falls off and you get the metallic clatter.

The solution is to remove the plenum tray under the rear screen (accessed via the boot) and glue some new fabric on.

The purpose of these vents is to allow air to be sucked out of the cabin via ducts on the underside of the boot floor when moving but to prevent exhaust fumes entering the cabin when stopped or moving slowly.
