Series 2 front scuttle repair

My series 2 is suffering from the usual corrosion around front screen, its not bad or gone through but has surface corrosion under the paint, I know this can be treated to an extent but as with all rust it will eventually start to creep back. I'm having a proper look over the winter as it needs a new screen rubber and whilst screen is out I can address the headlining which is starting to bubble.
What is everyone opinion on this? I don't think panels are available so I'm wondering what others have done when repairing theirs.

Hi - 2 years later... but I have just done this exact job on my Series 1 XJ6. I got a local guy to take out the windscreen and old rubber surround, then treated the rust at the corners like this: 1) scraped all the old rust off . 2) painted with Kurust 3) two coats of zinc primer . 4) 1 coat white primer 5) three coats of final paint. I was lucky in that the rust under the rubber surround was superficial and hadn't gone through the metal, so no welding needed. However, it was a time consuming job that necessitated the removal of the 'crash roll' above the dashboard and the repainting of the entire scuttle. When the front screen was replaced we found that the rubbers supplied by SNG Barratt were very difficult to re-fit (too hard, very difficult to get the chromes to fit in properly). I think it might pay to aska few more questions than I did about who made the replacement rubber and how old it is. I suspect softer rubbers are better if you can get them. Also, try to do this job in the summer rather than the winter, because warmer weather = more pliable rubber!

I had terrible trouble with windscreen fitting a few years ago. After trying three replacement rubbers starting with a genuine old stock Jaguar one ruined by an incompetent fitter, I had to resort to re-using the original which, fortunately, proved possible. With so few series 1 and 2 cars on the road these days, I proffer the suggestion that there may only be one or two suppliers of screen rubbers still willing to produce them. Consequently, it's very difficult to find good ones. Mike.
