Boot badges

So, my car is a November 1985 3.4 series 3

The simple question is what are the correct badges for the boot please?

I had thought that the plastic letters style that appeared to be stuck onto a black horizontal bar were the correct fitting but having read again Nigel Thornley's book, Original Jaguar XJ, I am wondering if in fact, the simpler, rectangular alloy badge is the correct style. If this I the case, then were the engine sizes in the same rectangular size also used please? An idea of correct positioning in mm from a given datum point would be handy too.

Have you checked the Jaguar Classic parts site to see if the parts book there lists a VIN change point? It might be worth a try. Mike.

If so, then when I spoke with them earlier in the year for a Mk IX part, they couldn't have been more dis-interested.
Eventually saying they only have information on E-type

The site I mentioned is www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk. There, amongst other things, you can find copies of the parts books for older models which can be very helpful when looking for part number changes and the appropriate VIN change points. Mike.

Its all a bit pedantic really. SC Parts give a date of August 1985 as the changeover, Jaguar Classic Parts list a VIN number so between the two, you'd think that you can identify the correct badge. Well, possibly not as Jaguar Classic give VIN nos to 482169 and from 482170, the problem with that being it doesn't give 2 images of the different badges, although SC Parts does show 2 badges both "from August 1985".............

What I really need is the build date to nail it fully!
Car's VIN is 440090
Not that any of it actually matters............

Hi Clive,
Paul Skilleter's book, 'The XJ Series Jaguars' shows a pic of a 1983/84 (pages 70/71 A reg) car having the plastic badges you describe. So, from your car's VIN before the VIN change point, I'd say it's fair to assume you were right to fit the earlier style badges for 'Jaguar' and '4.2'. Dates of first registration were often very different from the build dates which you could get by buying a Heritage certificate from Jaguar . Mike.
