V12 gearbox won't kick down

Hello,
I have owned a project 1974 V.P. Double Six, which has been variously on and off the road since 1996. Following some work on vacuum pipes, carbs and brakes over winter, it has passed an MOT and is back on the road for the first time since 2012, and running well. I was reminded on the run back home that the gearbox would not kick down (it never has in my ownership). On checking the kick-down switch, it can be moved by hand and works electrically, but I cannot understand how it is supposed to be activated by the throttle, as the throttle cable just runs back and forward alongside the arm of the switch (with a small wheel on the end), whatever the throttle position. There appears to be nothing in place that would physically activate the switch while driving and I've started to wonder whether something is missing. The car has the early 4 carb engine and dates from 09/74, body 2p1431BW. Any help much appreciated, Bill.

Your description makes it sound like you may possibly have either a non Jaguar replacement throttle cable or a poorly adjusted switch. When adjusted correctly, and when the carb levers come up against the throttle stops, additional accelerator pressure moves the Jaguar cable against the wheel of the switch. The correct cable (RHD) is part number C38816/2. Mike.
