The BW 12 gearbox needs automatic transmission fluid type 'F' (M2C 35F) not Dexron which has friction modifying additives so you'll need to find another source of fluid. Mike.

Thanks Mike. Apparently it takes nine litres but assuming that's with the torque converter still un-drained.

The BW12 took 16.5 pints to fill when dry and about 11 pints for a typical drain and refill operation. Mike.

There's an uprated neoprene sump gasket - 107281/U - £12 from SNGB - I used one on mine.

When the sump is off, have your local engineering shop braze on a drain plug - makes later fluid changes so much easier.

Thanks for the heads up.

Is there an off-the-shelf drain plug and socket around that I can post to the workshop before my next visit?

Do the ATF sump bolts have a special head requiring a specific tool to remove?
Automatic Choice didn't have either available

HI Richard

The bolts are 1/2 AF spanner size - those on the LHS are tricky to get at but I managed it without moving the exhaust - very fiddly and tight access. The tightening torque is 13 ft lbs or 18 n/m. You won't get a torque wrench on all bolt heads with the exhaust in place but it should be OK tightening by "feel". I had to grind down an off-set ring spanner to get a purchase on the last bolt head.

Your workshop should have access to a source of plug kits (can't remember who supplied mine) but insist on a Dowty washer and magnetic tip for the plug.

Been down to the body shop this last Sunday.
And found that there was fresh ATF indicated on the dipstick. Level up to half showing.
Still haven't connected up the new fuel tank and pump yet so it still hasn't been run up to temperature

Given that the ATF (I don't know what's been put in there) was clear and without any blackening contaminant flakes showing, it looks as if a previous has been at it before -- and found what I'm finding.

I've had a quote of about £500 for a second hand BW12 box with a £125 fitting fee.
Is that about right. Or can they be got for less? Any known specialist suppliers?

Coz the wheels are off, don't yet know if the Park bar is broken -- indicating that I'd have to change out anyway

Considering the work involved in changing a gearbox, it makes sense to do your homework when buying any second hand gearbox. Does it come with any evidence that it was working well before it was removed? It's a big risk fitting a gearbox with an unknown history. Even a guarantee to replace it if faulty, would only cover part of the cost/aggro. Alternatively, bite the bullet and exchange yours or have it reconditioned to minimise the chance of future problems. Mike.

Rather late to the party, and probably this has been checked already, but the gear change linkage can seize and snap at the small ball joint at the end of the lever on the box itself. Guess how I know this... Needless to say, the result is an inability to select any gear.

The floor pans, cross members, foot wells are all in place now.
Did rather hope that the box's plate and linkages could've been seen from above before.
Oh well...

The fresh loom's going in on Thursday, so will try to have a look at the linkage then when I go down

Trouble is, if I get down to have a look as I'd like, I'd have some little difficulty getting up again

So what did you do to re-connect the linkage. Was there enough of a stub to braze the rod back together?
Or does the linkage come apart for another?

In my case, the ball broke off the end of the stud that bolts to the plate that's attached to the change shaft out of the gearbox. I have a lathe, so I could make a new stud and ball-end.

At last, had a report back yesterday when the workshop ran the engine up to temperature -- the gearbox suddenly selected a gear and the rear hubs started turning :P

This after about 10 mins in neutral though. Haven't driven it so dunno how sweet the gear change is on this BW12 (AS12) Did speak with the scrap yard though who said he'd had an early XJ6 and it was generally known that the engine would have to be run up at least weekly to ensure the ATF circulated.

Rad seems good, but core plugs leeching -- so having the coolant flushed and core plugs changed -- dunno about heater matrix. Some hoses are leeching too so having a complete Kevlar OEM set fitted courtesy of another forum member who had an unused set HK023
