Rear crankshaft oil seal

Hi,
The rear crank rope oilseal on my XK engine is leaking and I am considering fitting a lipseal upgrade kit. Can anyone tell me what is involved in terms of crank machining?
Also, the lipseal must have a gap to allow it to fit onto the crank, so how is oil prevented from getting past this gap?
Thanks,
Newton
