Dip stick for 2.8l engine

Postby jeremy.hann616 » Thu Apr 10, 2025 1:02 pm

Hello flolks
My first time on here so not sure if anyone can help.
I've got a Mk2 with a replacement 2.8 L XJ6 engine, but unfortunately the dip stick is from a 340 / 4.2, so guess the indicator level mark may not be in the right place.
If anyone has a spare 2.8 Dip stick that I could purchase or could possibly let me know where the max / min marks should be in relation to the collar that would be most helpful.
Thanks all in anticipation.

Overfilling an engine is just as dangerous as underfilling it. First, you need to be sure which sump the engine has, before assuming that your dipstick is necessarily incorrect. Confirming which sump you have, would enable you to find its appropriate capacity. Then, you could do an oil change with that measured quantity of oil and mark your dipstick accordingly after running the engine to circulate the fresh oil. Mike.

Thanks Mike
Looks like more investigation Required, but if the engine was changed I would have thought they would have kept the original sump.
Presume there will be a identification number on it somewhere ?
Cheers

Sadly, once someone starts modifying a car, it pays to assume nothing and to double check everything. It's the only way to be certain and to get things right. If you are unsure which sump you have and hence, which dipstick you need, take pictures of what you have and send them to Ken Jenkins. He's had a lot of experience in this area and knows what interchanges well and what doesn't work. Mike.

Mike. once again many thanks for your help.
I will try and get some sensible photos of the sump and send them to Ken to check what I have.
Cheers
