Sump plug washer size

Postby NATONEIL » Tue Dec 22, 2015 12:46 pm

When I next service my SS100 replica I will need to change the sump plug washer. The car has a 4.2 litre engine from a XJ6 Series 2 and the part No is C22961. To buy one of these from SNG Barratt is 75p each plus £4;50 postage plus VAT. This is much less than a tank of fuel but it annoys me that the cost of P&P is much more than the item I need.

I would be grateful if anyone who has a spare could measure it and tell me what size it is. That way I can pop into my local supplier and buy something suitable without the expensive mark up.

(I like SNG Barratt but object to their very expensive P&P charges for small items a washer could be sent in a standard 2nd class envelope)

Neil,
I appreciate your reluctance to shell out silly money for a replacement washer.

My old XJ has had regular oil changes over the past forty years and I have never replaced that thin copper washer. If it don't leak don't worry.

I reuse copper washers but I anneal them first. That is, heat them up until they glow and then quench them in water. This makes a new crystal structure in the metal and makes it soft again so it will seal.

Thanks David and Oldtimer.

I normally use them again and also anneal them before refitting but I have noticed that my washer is deforming and that is the reason I thought I would replace it next time I do an oil change. I am aware that when I next drain the oil I will have a washer which I could measure it against but I do a fair bit of driving and my next oil change will be in the middle of the summer so I thought I would try to source one in advance.

SNG Barratt attend quite a lot of shows. I think you can pre-order and collect from them at a show and they don't charge the p&p? If you're intending to come to the Restoration Show at the NEC or Spares Day in March you may be able to make use of that facility?
