Bi metallic corrosion

Postby Tintin » Mon Nov 13, 2017 3:24 pm

I am about to refit my exhaust manifolds and want to use new studs and brass nuts. SNGB are out of steel studs but have offered stainless steel instead. The studs won't be subjected to a great torque but I am unsure as to the risk of corrosion between the SS studs/alloy head/brass nuts/steel washers/cast iron manifolds. Sounds like quite a cocktail!

Any advice very welcome.

Thanks.

The stainless studs sound like a good idea and aren't so expensive these days. Stainless nuts on stainless studs in hot locations can be problematical (galling or cold welding) so don't be tempted to go that route. Mike.

Thanks Mike that's reassuring. I'll go ahead with the S/S studs.
