4.2 engine suddenly has started to blue smoke
Moderator:LJR
hi, can anyone help with why my 4.2 daimler has started to give out a puff of smoke? car still drives fine , but if u drive say 5 mile then stand at lights , pull away to a puff of oil smoke , not allways only some times when hot , no smoke from start up at all , can it be valve seals , engine only done 56000 miles and appears spot on , any help please.

It could very well be the valve stem oil seals.
They harden with age.
How old is the engine in years, original? If so, mileage doesn't mean much, but a 25 or 30 year old seal will probably be past its sell-by date.

the engine is a 1985 year.

So, if the head has never been off, the seals are likely the original, 26 year-old ones.
But getting the head off to replace them is quite a bit of work, if nothing else needs doing. Maybe worth living with the problem for a bit?

A dose of seal revitaliser fluid added to the oil may soften things up a bit.
Available from most high street motor stores. Perhaps worth a try.

Certainly sounds like Valve stem oil seals. A revitaliser may work, but not for long
