2007 Sovereign - centre console lights not working

Hi everyone,
I am new to the club having just bought my first ever Jaguar - finally ... after 30years of lusting! The car is a daily user and drives beautifully but there are a few minor niggles that I would like to address. I have looked through the X350 forum and as far as I can see this particualer issue doesn't appear to have been previously covered - I even used BOTH eyes.
The issue I have is that none of the centre console buttons OR the clock lights illuminate during the hours of darkness. I have contacted SNG Barratt (hoping this might be a bulb issue) and was informed that there are no bulbs detailed on the parts schematic.
Can anyone throw any light (pun intended) on this matter please?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Paul,

When you say the "centre console", do you mean the area around the gear selector, or do you mean the area with the satnav screen, heater controls, radio etc?

Have a look through the Jaguar parts diagrams yourself. You'll see that there is a bulb shown for the clock etc as a minimum.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for responding - I was referring to the lights that illuminate the buttons around the sat nav/climate control screen. SNG Barratt stated that there were no bulbs listed for the buttons around the screen so I am at a loss - fibre optics maybe?
Thanks for the link regarding the bulb for the clock - at least I will be able to see the time when I am driving.

Paul,

Even though I used to own an X350, I don't know the nature of the illumination on those buttons.

Could be a fibre-optic circuit or could be soldered circuit bulbs?

I'd suggest you give David Marks or Swallows a call and ask them.

FWIW both the Workshop Manual and the Electrical Guide for my 2008 car treat the SatNav screen and associated controls as a black box. I guess the only way to find out how its lights work may be to take one apart. Whether you want to be the guinea pig here perhaps depends on you nerve and wallet .

Actually someone must have investigated to some extend what's inside for the Jagdroid replacement.

Hi Paul Baker,
As you are new to Jaguar and the X350 model and may not have a handbook a silly questions first: have you found how to adjust the dimmer switch sufficiently, located on the auxiliary switch panel (where the front and rear fog light switches are located)? I checked my dimmer and on the lowest setting the various centre console lamps can appear to be off, and the clock is barely visible. (To adjust the setting you have to push the control gently in to get the knob to pop out so that it can be turned to adjust.)

I have been looking at your problem with a copy I have of the 2006 Electrical Guide (i.e. circuit diagrams) so in answer to your question about replacement bulbs etc. I can tell you that only the clock has filament bulbs(2), all the other illuminated switches and detailing lights around the car are LEDs and are probably not replaceable without changing the module itself.

All of the internal switch lamps are powered from one output on the Front Electronic Module (FEM), however the clock is the exception and has a separate output pin, so unless both bulbs have failed the clock should light up at least a little. Lack of clock illumination as well probably rules out a FEM or wiring fault. As the FEM connects to the Instrument Cluster pack this is where the dimmer control and also the steering column lighting stalk switch also connects. It would be interesting to know if your instrument lights (speedo, rev counter, etc.) also do not dim at night as this may indicate a bad connection from the dimmer control circuit to the instrument pack. Do your external lights work correctly? A lack of "lights on" warning lamps in the instrument cluster may indicate a fault in the lighting stalk. "Lights on" status is needed by the control circuits to know to dim the switch and clock lighting etc.

Thank you both for your consideration/posts relating to my centre console lighting issue. My XJ is currently having work completed so will investigate further upon its return. I won't let this issue go unattended and will post the solution when I have one ... even if it is a dimmer switch / operator error outcome.

I found that a spurt of switch cleaner made a tremendous improvement. I use Servisol Super 10, about £10 for a 200ml can; lasts for yonks. freely available online and next day delivery usually.
