Boot struts

OK so the sore bit on the back of my head tells me that the boot struts on my big cat don't like the cold weather,any comments on whether this is a common feature please guys or am I into replacements!?

I bought a pair from SGS Engineering about 3 years ago because my originals were a little tired and quite rusty. They cost about £40 delivered from memory and were at least half the price of OEM originals. They are very good except for one annoying fault: in cold weather the seals creak like an old barn door the first time you open the boot, although they extend to full height OK. I contacted their help desk who said to return them for investigation, which was all very well but I'd thrown the others in the bin which had then been collected by the bin men. As returning them would have left me with no struts, I've put up with the cold weather creak ever since. I find a squirt of WD40 on the seals helps, although they say on their web site not to lubricate them.

Thanks for your input guys,pair sourced from SGS,just under £40,think I am going to wait for the temperature to rise more than somewhat before I fit them though!

I used SGS adjustable ones on my tailgate. Seem to be robust although the "mechanic" who fitted them didn't seem to know that you use the enclosed 2mm Allen key to loosen / tighten the Allen screw in one second (I plan on ½ sec when I get the car back) bursts of escaping gas alternating either side until the opening / closing function is restored to your liking...
