Can anyone tell me if I need any special tools or knowledge to renew the front discs and pads on my friends 2003 X350 3.0 sport. I am competent with this sort of work, but have not worked on the X350 yet.
Thanks in advance,
Dave Donoghue.

Note that Jaguar have a general recall for replacement of brake pipes (due to corrosion) on early X350 models the affected Vin Range goes from G00001 to G27878.
I believe this effects all X350's upto early 2004. Your main Jaguar dealer should carry this out freee of charge.

My 2004 X350 is just beyond these numbers and all looked fine when I changed the engine oil & filter last Sunday. However I did note surface rust on the front sub frame especially along the seams, I intend to clean it off and apply waxoil at next oil change. Has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks for all replies, I have done the job now. No problems, just made sure to bleed excess fluid rather than pushing it back into the ABS pump. Brake pipes were looked at by dealer under recall and found to be OK.

Replaced my front brake pads today on my 03 V6. More than enough wear on the old ones. Not tried them yet, but was suffering from long foot brake pedal travel, which lead me to investigate. TRW replacements and a really easy and quick job, will let you know how they fair in a week or so. Richard

Well done.

TRW is in fact Mintex (Badge engineering!)

Two of my threads on 4.2R brakes can be found in these links.

In many respects, the four pot Brembo calipers and pads are easier to overhaul than those found on the lower powered cars. Just pins to knock out to drop the pads out.

Worth noting that brake fluid should be changed every three years to prevent condensation build up within the fluid and to help keep internal system corrosion to a minimum.

Brakes much better all round now. Long brake pedal movement has gone and the brakes are much more effective. They still work like Jaguar brakes are designed, gentle relaxing stopping, rather than a more violent stop experienced on my Qashqai by only lightly touching the pedal.
Easy job, well worth doing for £26 all in.
