Auto handbrake

Hi,

On my 2007 XJ6 (2007) the auto handbrake keeps either locking on as it is now or does not automatically come on when you switchoff. It is an intermitent fault both ways. Two garages have looked at it but to no avail. It is due to go into Harwoods in Brighton next week. Even the AA could only disconnect the handbrake motor. Can anybody help?

Parking brake issues are often down to neglect. If the parking brake works well, every one leaves it alone until it malfunctions.

In service parking brake calipers or pads rarely receive any preventative maintenance. It is not uncommon for caliper slider mechanisms and pistons to corrode solid or for pads to seize in the calipers. Stripping, cleaning and removing corrosive deposits, then copper greasing moving parts as needed will often get things moving again. Few garage will take the trouble to service park brake mechanisms on a regular basis and problems eventually occur. Little or no regular maintenance equals unreliability. If you are having issues , then I`d advise having the calipers and pads cleaned up and greased before condemning the motor unit unless otherwise proven to be defective. Maintenance is all.

You'll need the ODB codes read; the control box can post several messages when there's a problem. One of the most common is down to damaged wiring where it passes through/round chassis members.
