knocking from rear wheel

Postby stypemike2245 » Mon Feb 04, 2019 6:57 pm

Hi all got my 350 out over the weekend and was really pleased it stated first time the new battery holding power well. I reversed out the drive to then go forward but as this happened one or two knocks could be felt and heard from the drivers side rear wheel. any ideas what this may be would be appreciated. once moving the brakes and hand brake work in the normal way.

Does the noise persist when driving? Most knocks are suspension or wheel bearing, the latter may be a more constant grinding noise. First thing is to remove the wheel and check for any obvious suspension issues. Difficult to assess wheel bearings as the usual method of looking for play when rocking the wheel can be harder on big heavy wheels.

S-type, XF and X350 can suffer brake pad knock.

This can occur is anti-rattle springs are broken or missing or if pad retainer pins are excessively worn. This may cause a pad(s) to move when the car goes from reverse to forward or vice versa.

I would have thought an investigation into caliper and brake condition would be the most sensible place to start.

One other thing. Are wheel nuts tight?

hi guys thanks for reply's. I did manage to further tighten the wheel by hand using the wrench from the boot jaguar supplied. I wasn't convinced the fit of the wrench was a 100%. I've popped along to my local independent jag garage and he'll be giving it a health check next week. in the mean time I'll probably have a good look at the rear brakes at the weekend. this brings me round to the question of kit. I don't possess a trolley jack or axle stands are there any recommendations.
regards mike.

To be safe, you must have and use suitable equipment. We have heard of too many accidents with people using scissor jacks which then turn over if any leverage is applied to the car. Cars are heavy to pick up and a human skull cannot support a Jaguar without crushing!

Trolley jacks and axle stands are not expensive. Neither are quality tool kits. Halfords will supply from any of their stores and their kit is well made for many years of use. These cars deserve well fitting tools for maintenance rather than rusty old low grade box spanners with tommy bars.

Like any hobby or interest, it is important to get properly kitted and become knowledgeable about what you are likely to find when you begin to strip down your car. The same goes for re-assembly.

Details on brake overhauls for S-type and X350 can be found in the brake sections of each model section. Many of the posts have image illustration which will give a useful guide for each operation. That said, if you have any doubts about your ability to tackle what can often be difficult work, then best advice should always be sought from a suitably experienced person.

mike,

Naturally you need to check if there is a significant noise constantly occurring. But in my experience with an x350 (and indeed with nearly any car, if it's been left standing, it's quite likely to have a bit of surface disc rust. Even after 24 hours and some moisture, this can occur. So, initially reversing often causes a bit of sticking followed by a release and it can result in grinding, clicking, knocking noises as pads release and settle. I wouldn't worry too much unless it's happening all the time. Just my thoughts.

Good luck
