rear brake pads failure

Postby stypemike2245 » Wed Jul 17, 2019 9:37 pm

hi everyone
not been on for a while but been busy with car. My latest concern is while driving home from work a few weeks back at the end of the motorway my brakes sounded awful and felt just as bad. At first I thought it was the air suspension had failed and the tyres where rubbing on the wheel arches. No warning showing so carried on stopping at the next lights and the grinding sounded and felt uncomfortable. I took it easy and got home and inspected the brakes. There was heavy scoring on the outer edge of the disc and there seems to be nothing left of the pads. So it looks like I require rear disc and pads and I'm hoping to replace these myself. My concern is the car passed it's MOT with no problems and I also had a full service 250 miles ago. should the brakes condition have been flagged up. As regards replacing pads and discs my searches have found some staggering differences in price. obviously you get what you pay for but recommendations would be appreciated. Incidentally a local jaguar franchise quoted £680. totally puzzled by the advert the next day in the magazine saying disc brake and pads from £255?

I'll probebly wait for some feed back before i make any decisions.

The prices you quote are exorbitant!

I fitted four genuine new TRD/Mintex discs and all pads together with the four small handbrake pad sets for £200 a couple of years ago. You can get similar prices by grabbing the part numbers and tapping individually into an internet search engine. Ebay sourced all the parts I required although they came from several different suppliers. You will need to hunt using your car VIN identifier as the parts varied from model year to model year. Early XJR cars have Brembo calipers with pre-face-lift and run out cars having Teves calipers. Disc diameter sizes also vary.

Check out the web sites at Manners, Barretts, British Parts, North East Jaguar Spares and Berkshire Jaguar Components. All will be able to help identify parts you require.

Genuine Jaguar boxed parts are Mintex in a Jaguar box. They are often more expensive. It makes sense to source Mintex parts and save money.

Park brake pad sets are only about 50mm square and linings are little more than 6mm in thickness. You will need a piston wind back set ( Ebay for about £25) to tackle the park brake calipers. Ensure the pistons wind back easily and lubricate with brake fluid to get them to rotate easily. Anything seized may require work to free off.

If you go to the Brake Section within this X350 Section, you will find my threads on brake overhaul. Similarly, you can access the JEC past magazine archive on this site if you are a Club member. I began working on my XJR from Sept 2015 and catalogued repair procedures as I re-built my car. This included three magazine articles on brake overhaul complete with images and text. Perusal of magazines from Sept 2015 is worth doing if only to view the brake repair articles.

Mike,

You haven't populated your signature, but I think you bought a 2005 4.2, didn't you?

It would be worth checking the inner pad and also the wear on the other side. The reason being that if all have worn down evenly, then it should definitely have been reported at the last service and MoT if only 250 miles ago. However, if you find that the other 3 pads are much less worn, then you could have a sticking caliper piston on the side that has worn. I had exactly this 2 weeks ago on my Range Rover which completely wore out the outer pad and ruined a disc after I'd changed the rear discs and pads only 14k miles previously.

Mike K makes a good point about prices. There are huge variations in price from different suppliers. For example, Euro Car Parts can be very competitive on price when discount codes are available. I did a quick check this morning and if you use the discount code MID60 it seems you can buy a pair of Mintex rear brake discs and pads for your car for just £65 total delivered free. That seems very competitive! Just check the disc size as to whether it's a 288mm or 326mm size as I think there are differing sizes on the rears of x350s.

Good luck

Paul is correct on sizes and suppliers.

Early cars with the orange wing indicator lamps have silver "Jaguar R" Brembo calipers and large diameter discs of 365mm. The pre-face lift and run out models from about MY05 and with clear oval indicators lamps have black Teves calipers and front discs of 355mm. It is imperative that the correct parts are selected for your car.
