358 EPB Warning

Afternoon

I've read through previous topics where the 'Parkbrake Fault' warning is being shown (as it is in my case) and tried the 30 second re-set procedure - without any success.

The car's been into my local guy who's checked all mechanicals are working and he's said it's fine and working properly. It's also been into Jag who said their diagnostics couldn't see any logged fault, but couldn't clear the error either. They want me to book it in for a 2 day inspection, but I'm actually wanting to sell the car soon (forthcoming marriage!) so don't want to spend their prices!!

Has anyone seen this before? Are there electrical components I can check myself?

I had a couple of similar issues with the EPB as the elderly battery on the car began to fail in cold winter weather. It was probably seven or eight years old and finally lost the will to live when cold starting. These modern cars are hugely dependent on battery condition for reliable operation. Low voltage is well known by us for causing apparent vehicle faults with no fault codes. When a new battery is fitted, the daftness often goes away again.

I`d suggest a battery voltage drop test before chasing the apparent fault further. That will give the true battery condition under high load and an idea of how voltage recovers a minute or so after the load has been removed. A slow rise in voltage would suggest an OK battery. An immediate rapid rise indicates a failing battery.

Perhaps some encouragement can come from this further tail. My car sat for a few days last week unused. I`d messed about in the car over the period installing various electronic gizmos into the car. Doors were left open for a while as was the boot. Next day I had a slow engine star crank complete with the glove box opening and the petrol cap door opening. The dash message centre also threw up a park brake error message. Working the handbrake switch cleared the message and I took the car for a twenty minute run to re-charge the battery. Normal service next day resumed after an overnight rest. Case proved. Low or duff batteries cause havock. If in doubt, chuck it out!

Many thanks for that - I'll try the battery first, though it can't be more than a year old. That said, the car suddenly started running unevenly the other day - the engine would rev up and down on an even 'pulse' and finally clear.

I'll get it tested and report back!!

Two ideas.

A diagnosis using a suitable tool. The iCarsoft 930i is capable of locating historic faults and the clearing of them. That assumes no fault is present.

The second idea is to hard dump the car systems by disconnecting the battery for a minimum of 20 minutes. This will clear any fault codes given that a fault is not present on the car. Ensure you have the radio code before disconnection. The clock will need resetting to the correct time also.

Try that now and see how you get on.

Hello again

I'm still struggling with the issue of this warning still being on, yet the mechanics are fine and operates properly. Before I commit to sending it back to Jaguar (who agree it works yet cannot clear the fault), I thought I'd have another stab on here first.

As I'm trying to sell the car, I can't afford to go buying diagnostics equipment, so am enquiring if there are electrical components in the system I can check? Dumping the battery hasn't worked at all, so the components (whatever they may be) are my last option before spending mega-bucks at Jaguar.

I`m out of other ideas really, short of perhaps changing the control module or disconnecting/reconnecting the module plug a few time to perhaps clean minor corrosion that may be present.

Have you tried holding the EPB switch down, turning the ignition on whilst continuing to hold the switch down. Then switch the ignition off again...that puts the EPB into a service mode condition. Then starting up and driving the car should then throw up a calibration mode on the dash message centre. Working the EPB switch five or six times should then restore normal operating mode. Worth a try if not already tried.

I`d use a good local independent Jag man rather than a main dealer. They can be just as effective or even better than main dealers...cheaper too.

Thanks again - I'll give that a try. I found even some of the best local Jag men (West Riding in my case) don't have the capabilities to explore the tech as deeply as the main dealer.

Is there anywhere online where I can find images of what the control module looks like and where it's located??

From memory, David, you should find it OSR behind the side carpet adjacent to the grey rear electronic module box. It appears to be the black plastic boxed unit which is shown in the attached image.

As you'd expect, the box isn't where the picture suggests!! Before I start pulling carpet elsewhere, do you have any ideas where it could be otherwise located!!??

Now you really have me foxed. What a pain.

I think this car needs to go to an independent guy or to a main dealer.

Perhaps you could let us know what you find as the diagnosis. Sorry, run out of ideas.
