These bracelet type rings interference fit over the outside diameter of a drive shaft. They are "looked at" by a sensor mounted usually above the reluctor with a small air gap between the sensor and the reluctor. The sensor counts the ring spaces and speed and that of three other similar units at the other wheels. A computor module receives information from the sensors and computes the speed of each wheel. If one or more wheels is out of sync with others, the computer reduces engine power and applies individual brakes to bring matters back under control. The system also controls anti-lock braking.

In service, the reluctor ring is known to be affected by corrosion between the shaft and the reluctor. Corrosion expands and forces the ring away from the shaft. This is not good as the ring can then hit the sensor. Sensors can sometimes be packed away from the ring as a short term answer to reluctor corrosion issues.Again in the short term, reluctors can be cleaned of external diameter corrosion which may give a limited extra lifespan. Reluctors that are beyond redemption or further life can often be replaced.

I wonder how many of us have recently inspected or cleaned these components. Not many, I`ll wager. I`m as guilty and anyone else. I have to do a few minor paint defects on the wheels this year. Whilst they are off, then I think it is time I cleaned and inspected my reluctor rings.

Excellent. I had to change one of mine last year and they were VERY hard to get. If this is a new source that can only be a good thing. Thank you for telling us.
