Does your extended warranty cover it?

Hi Andy and David, The extended warranty only covers a maximum up to a £1000.00 per repair so quite a bit short i'm afraid.
I too thought that this quote was a bit steep and am grateful for your thoughtful and practical replies regarding sourcing a used box and getting a Independent Jag garage to fit. Problem there is maybe they might not like using unproven 2nd hand Units? Unless they have them in stock maybe.
I am based in Gloucester so have Mike Allen services in Swindon and also Swallows near Weston Super Mare as nearest to talk to about this.
I have used Bristol Transmissions in the past for a gearbox service on my X308, and have been impressed with their work. I believe they do a lot of Jaguar transmissions. They have remanufactured ZF 6 speed units for £2200.00 in stock. But then there's the all important fitting and Mapping on top.
I suppose i feel a bit disgruntled because i have only had the car since October 22 and paid probably top money for a 2005 MY car. I was happy to do that as i thought it was a good buy after a lot of research and looking and test driving several different cars. What do i know eh?
Thanks again for the input. I will go into Gloucester tomorrow to pick up the car and talk to the garage owner as to exactly what he has found and the reason a rebuild is required. After all the diagnostic is costing me £90 + VAT so want something a bit more substantial than an over the phone quote. Luckily i don't need the car urgently as we still have the 2002 x308. Will update tomorrow.
Regards
Rod

If you are confident in them then yes does sound like a bit of a disaster. Before spending money check nothing else major is imminent if possible!

Hello again,
I had a very reasonable conversation with the garage owner when i collected the car on Tuesday morning. He said their diagnostic check showed that the gearbox was showing evidence of internal clutch slipping in 2nd to third gear and did i notice the car was not pulling as it should in those gears. My answer to that was no. I thought this car was much livelier accelerating than my X308!
He said it also thumped into gear between 2nd and 3rd which is the only symptoms i had experienced. In his opinion the only solution was a full rebuild of the box. He said he had performed a set up using dealer level equipment after the diagnostic check to reset all the original parameters back to jaguar spec. I asked if a transmission fluid and filter / sump change would make any difference, but he thought i would be wasting my money. He appreciated i would need to think about spending another £3120.00 on the car and that i could drive the car safely home.
On the drive home i thought the car was much smoother through the gear changes, and no matter how i drove, it did not thump into gear once. I drove it again today for a couple of miles and still no thump into gear so far.
I just don't know what to think, but have not got a lot of confidence in the car at the moment.
Grand kids are coming to stay for a few days today and we have a few things planned to do with them so car will have to sit on the drive until i can give it some time next week. It will be all i can do to keep up with the grandkids for now.

It’s a tricky one, maybe seek advice from David Marks on it?

Andy Thats a good shout, i have had excellent advice from David Marks in the past.
I did another round trip of 30 miles yesterday evening in traffic and country roads and it never missed a beat.
Thanks
Rod
