Poor Sounding Stereo.

Postby mstanley3814 » Fri Mar 22, 2019 12:03 pm

Morning Jag Enthusiasts.....

I have a Jag XJ X350 2.7d Sport Premium with the standard stereo in it, pre DAB, and standard speakers installed.

The issue I am having is that I am getting some distortion in the sound when music is played louder.... the issue is that I can't really pin point which speaker it is and even if it is there as it could just be noise in the background of the CD being played!!
The sound I am hearing is a bit like a blown speaker but when I select individual speakers from the head unit I cannot hear any distortion from any speaker!!
There is always the possibility that the noise I am hearing is a rattle / squeak from a piece of loose trim but as I am mostly in the car on my own this is hard to pin-point!

The question I have is therefore 2 fold;

1. If I am going to start replacing speakers, Alpine I believe, as they are physically the same size so I would not envisage any installation issues?
2. The amplifier in the head unit.... Does anyone know if the amp is standard across the range and would be suitable to power the better quality speakers??

Speaking of the amplifier...
Does anyone know if the stereo set up is a single amp powering all speakers or if the Jag utilises the system where there is a secondary any to provide power to the rear speakers?
If this were the case it could be this slave amp that could be at fault causing sound quality issues at the rear.

A lot of questions I know but any help from anyone else who has had issues with or replaced these items would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.............

How long have you had the car?
I recently bought an XJR6 and the stereo was without a doubt the worst of any car I have owned over the last 40 years; I'm talking like the speakers were inside a big of Rice Krispies (other breakfast cereals are available).
Went on various forums and had loads of advice which I didn't understand.
Drove it for a couple of hundred miles and cough, fart, fixed!
Didn't have to do anything other than wake it all up.

Had the car a couple of years now and it did sound fine when I first had it but the 'bag of rice krispies' analogy is a good one as this is the kind of sound I am hearing............ not all the time though which is the really annoying bit and the main problem as if it were a constant hiss or fuzzy sound I could simply sit in the back and listen but it seems to come and go depending on road conditions and volume of music.
This kind of thing does lead to a rattly bit of trim I know but it also is not constant so you don't always hear it with the stereo off!!

Very annoying at the moment but I'm sure I'll get to the bottom of it eventually!
