Dashcam

Hi all,

I've been pondering a dashcam for a while now, I spend too much time watching russians crashing into each other on the internet, and am increasingly of the mind it offers protection from scammers etc.

Halfords/Currys seem to favour Nextbase (indeed its cited as one of the most popular in the UK) but when watching videos on the net the 'sharp' ones are often from Mio MyVue cameras.

Anybody have any experience of Nextbase or Mio they want to share, or any others you recommend and why?

The Nextbase 512GW (the newer 612GW has some lousy reviews and appears to have been 'rushed to market') OR the Mio MyVue 792 wifi pro are both catching my eye.

The Mio has the advantage that a separate rear camera MyVue A20 is available (around £79) that can be connected into the front one (maybe later as funds allow), and seamlessly integrates. The next base 512gw doesn't, although the new 612GW apparently has the option, but Nextbase haven't developed a rear camera yet!

So any top tips for a dash cam, anybody hardwired it in for 24/7 parking mode (so it can wake up and record if the car is hit), if so was it easy and any issues with the Jag's battery/electrics as a result?

Cheers
Carl

No experience with dash cams, I`m afraid.

Worth noting that many circuits on the car are negative switched.

I find myself tempted to fit a camera but I`ve now done 43 years on the road and only ever had one accident. (Car parked towards me in a lay-by pulled out across me. My near side rear wheel hit the kerb and the car rolled twice and was written off.....water cooled baby Fiat). I have to ask whether at my stage in life whether I really need one having survived without one for so long!

I have the DDpai M6plus fitted in my Disco, it is small without a screen that I found distracting on the previous one. It fits behind the mirror so does not block the view. It connects to my smart phone for playback and settings, it also has an emergency button you can fit anywhere in the car so if you have an "episode", by pressing it will save the previous 10 sec in a file.

I had it as a bit of a novelty to start, but after a few very near misses in our narrow Devon roads it has helped to confirm who is at fault.

I have just fitted a Nextbase 312GW to my F Type. Had it hard wired by local Jag specialists at very reasonable cost. Very happy with it. Picture quality is very good. I can’t have rear view because of the shape of the rear screen and the rear spoiler that deploys at speed! I’m investigating the possibility of incorporating the rear view parking camera into the system, but, at this stage, don’t know if it will be possible.
The 312GW got ‘which’ Best Buy in there recent review. :D

Regards. Ian.

Have a look under ‘Club Comment’ section, in general comment and chat. There is a series of posts there headed ‘dashcam in an F Type’. Lots of comments on what’s good and what’s not.

Happy reading.

Ian.

I had a Polaroid dash cam which was brilliant in its functions and video recording but I found that after a year the internal battery packed up. I bought a replacement battery but could not get it to function. After much searching on the net I bought a Maisi dash cam. Have had it for a couple of years and found it easy to use and not too intrusive. There is much choice out there but read some reviews first. Although the Nextbase is very popular I was a little disappointed in its night time vision abilities particularly trying to read registration numbers, but I suppose as usual you take your pick of the features you need and see if the camera matches up to them.
