Did mine today, thanks for the advice.
Had to go a bit more drastic than a drilled hole as the second ring on a springy arm which locates the lamp into the reflector assembly, was preventing extraction. A bit of Dremel action and the top of housing had a nice rectangular section cut out.
I could now manipulate the arm and get the lamp holder out easily. New lamp in and I had to put the holder in at a slight upward angle which meant it wouldn't line up with the second ring without depressing the arm to allow everything to line up, which would be next to impossible with the housing intact,
Maybe the arm/ring had been bashed at some time in the last 186000 miles.
I smoothed off the hole and piece I removed and then replaced it securing with a few strips of speed tape to keep the water (which should be minimal with the covering panel back on) out.
