HID dipped beam failure and headlight levelling device failuree

Postby RodFerris » Tue Oct 03, 2023 3:07 pm

Hi,
My 2005 X350 3.0 V6 failed its MOT yesterday on quite a few items but the one causing concern is the Offside HID dipped beam not working and Headlight levelling device inoperative.
Car is booked in to independent Jag specialist (Wiltshire Jag Swindon) but there was a moment of silence when i mentioned Headlamp issue. It turns out that it could be difficult for replacement parts for this issue. I got this from both Swallows and Wiltshire Jag when i was trying to get car booked in before re-test window expired.
Any experience of HID headlamp issues from you learned members out there.
Many thanks, Concerned from Gloucester

Hi Rod

One easy check is the earthing point near the headlights, a common failing.

Embarrassing confession coming up as it turns out i do not have HID headlamps on my car just standard halogen lamps. Only sussed it out when researching for second hand units and thinking these do not look like the headlamps in my car. So with the help of several past posts in this forum, i was able to replace the dipped beam halogen lamp (H7) with one i had in my garage. All working fine now. Still puzzled by " Levelling device inoperative " but i did find the top nearside headlamp unit securing bolt half undone which, when fully tightened, pulled the unit up some. Hopefully this has cured the low aim issue.
Apologies for misleading info on this thread but i do have working headlights now.
