Xenon Headlight Bulb Type.

Postby mstanley3814 » Sat May 18, 2019 6:08 am

Morning,

I have a pinking xenon headlight bulb on the nearside of my 2007 X350 2.7d so it's on the way out....

Does anybody know the bulb type that is fitted to save me having to remove the cowling and bulb to find out??

Thanks in advance......

Note the car may have halogen or bi-zenon as an uprate option. DS1 is the bi-zenon and there is a marking on the headlamp lens to signify.

Some of us have fitted the Osram Night Breaker after-market option which gives increased illumination. A pair of lamps will cost around £80 but the uprate is worth every penny.

Thanks for the help...

Is DS1 the bulb type irrespective of upgrade..?
I cannot see any indication of 'Bi-xenon on the headlight lens??

Had a look for a twin pack of the DS1 Night Breaker bulbs on e-Bay so happy enough to buy them as long as they are right.
I do plan to pull the faulty one out tomorrow as well so with a bit of luck there will be markings to clarify what is fitted.

My car not with me presently, so can`t get out there to confirm that DS1 is on the lens cover. Probably best to pull a lamp out to check before buying new lamps. Note ballast packs can also cause flickering issues.

The hand space behind the headlight is very limited though as is the space to extract the lamp and spring clip. This means that the bumper cover is best dropped down to allow the complete headlight unit to be un-bolted from the cross member/slam panel. Access is then easy.

Dropping the bumper cover off can be a pain. Fastenings corrode and can make removal extremely difficult. Note fixings to the wings require all screws to be removed and the cover to be pulled sharply outwards to allow the pop in fixing to pop out. Quite a pull is needed. Release fixings at the wheel arch liner and right down at the lowest point. Getting the cover off the car is the worst part. Headlamps un-bolt easily after which the lamps can be quickly removed. Whilst the cover is off, it is worth cleaning connections on parking sensors, washer pump and inter-cooler pump on S/C models.

You'll only have bi-xenon if you have headlamp washers and self levelling light units. That goes for main beam as well as dipped. If Bi-xenon's been fitted aftermarket then, unless all the other stuff's there it won't be MOT compliant. That's not to say that the tester will pick up on it though, as the heads' MOT test is for beam alignment only

I'm sure it's not what was meant in previous posts but Osram Night Breakers, being a filament Halogen bulb, cannot be put in place of a Bi-xenon. Osrams are good though, as are the Philips equivalent which are not so bright as the Osrams but last longer
