GSM Motorola to Bluetooth phone conversion

Postby J44EAG » Fri Oct 23, 2015 1:32 pm

My MY04 XJR has been fitted with a GSM Motorola phone within the centre front arm rest. This is a typical installation for a Jaguar of the period before the days of Bluetooth connectivity. State of the art when new but most inconvenient eleven years after production. There is no way of interfacing with my modern Android phone which has my SIM card and has the only number I wish to use or be contacted on. Dual SIM cards cannot be supplied by phone service providers. The only way around the issue would be to divert calls from my Android to another, say pay as you go SIM which I could then put in the GSM unit. What"s the point? No point at all is there?

Even if I were to use the above method, I don`t think there is a hands free facility on the GSM Motorola unit, and of course we need that to stay legal whilst driving. So presently I have a great car but no modern phone hook up. Getting a Parrot or similar unit is one option but installation might be a pain unless I were to sub the job out to a specialist fitting business. Not really happy about a cobbled up system which is bound to have user gremlins.

PTJS1 has been helping me over come the difficulties above with a view to retro installing a Bluetooth phone kit as fitted in later cars. I have Eurojag on the case as I write.

This link gives some idea of what might be required by way of salvaged or new parts. Most parts appear to be individually available new or second hand on the internet or via our favourite breakers, Eurojag. Presently, the best thing would appear to be to leave it to Eurojag to supply a complete second hand kit. These guys know their stuff so I`m hoping this will be the easiest method of obtaining what is needed and with the least faffing around.

This link is quite handy for anyone wanting to retro fit their car with Bluetooth equipment. I`m going effectively with Option 2b shown in the link which dispenses with the PSE unit and the BTUM unit which get removed from the car and newer Bluetooth parts are substituted.

My current questions are:-
Is the car likely to be fitted with an antennae? (doubtful in view of being pre Bluetooth) The same for a mic and fibre optic cable? I need also to ascertain the mounting locations of the new parts and hope I shall not have to dismantle the car internals to install. Any guidance appreciated.

Mike,

There is technology out there to handle dual sims. I have no idea if it can be adapted to meet your needs but take a look at
http://www.magic-sim.com. Might save a lot of hassle if the Jag unit can be fitted with a PAYG Sim that is paired with your Android phone.

Mike,

You undoubtedly already have a microphone. It's just whether it can interface to the new BTUM / PSE combined module. This is because you already have hands-free for your built-in phone! It all works via the touch-screen so you have to already have a mic either top centre or top right

As regards antenna: you need a bluetooth antenna and you don't have one of those in a pre-bluetooth car. So you can either:

- buy a Jaguar one
- buy a cheap ebay one
- buy coax and strip a bit and make a home-made dipole antenna

The bluetooth antenna doesn't need to be that good by all accounts. It's just about your mobile connecting to the BTUM/PSE module. Optimally it should terminate near the phone but many people seem to terminate it by back shelf or even in the boot! I'd suggest leaving it in the boot first then gradually strip out more trim and move it forward depending on its effectiveness.

Let us all know how it goes.

Thanks but not really what I am aiming for.

I need just one phone number rather than two different SIM cards with two different numbers in my Galaxy Android. IF that were possible, which it is not, it might have allowed the old wired Motorola to be used. However providers will not produce two identical SIM cards with the same phone number. That in itself would achieve little as it would be easier just to answer or use the Android!

What I need to achieve is to get rid of the GMS Motorola set up completely by removing the PSE and BTUM from the car. then installing later model OE Jaguar Bluetooth kit which comprises seemingly of the four items shown in Option 2b in my link. Once installed, effectively all I have to do is pair my Android Bluetooth facility to the later Jaguar Bluetooth module and I then get what I want. Namely true in car, hands and headset free, car loudspeaker linked Bluetooth compatibility using my Android as the contact Tx/Rx unit complete with the phone address and number data base.

To answer Paul, Ok it seems we may well not need the mic, just the antenna which appears to be a small module on a bracket with two screw holes.. These seem to be about £12 second hand. Still awaiting a reply from Eurojag.

Mike,

Just to clarify, you won't be removing a BTUM from your car! If you already had one, this thread wouldn't need to exist!

I spent quite a bit of time on looking on the net for the correct parts. The number of BTUM part numbers and versions of what appears to be a base unit, has melted me brain. Heads gone completely! I`m baffled.

Eurojag have still to come back to me with their suggested kit of parts.

In the meantime, I bought a Tesco SIM card for 49p from the corner shop and inserted it into the old Motorola GSM unit. I managed the nause that got me a PIN from the Tesco web site but could not buy an air time bundle without the site wanting to grab monthly payments. As I needed a pork pie, I went direct to the Tesco customer service and a knowledgeable chap managed to sell me a £10 code voucher which also gave me another free £20 worth of calls which have to be used by the 24th November this year. That doesn`t really matter much to me as I already have an unlimited plan on my Android. After another hour of sitting in the car, entering more pin codes, voucher numbers, despairing three times, logging in, activating everything in sight and possibly pulverising the UK telecoms industry, I finally had a working phone.

Paul is of course correct. If I have a GMS Motorola already fitted to the car, then hands free operation is possible with a microphone being fitted. I think it might be the N/S A pillar trim but more likely in one of the grills in the roof console switch panel.

I phoned what`s left of my Father using the Motorola and the touch screen to enter the phone number and dial facility. Chatting clarity was exceptional within the car and my Father remarked on just how easily he could hear me. It would appear the general quality is in fact rather better than the Galaxy Android that I normally use. Now I need to set up a divert facility to my new Tesco SIM card and at least I have some sort of an in car comms network operating in a hands free fashion. The arrangement is not perfect but time will tell if this set up is workable.

Fred Flintstone Telecoms now, eh?

Mike,

It will never be as good as a full Bluetooth integration but what you have done at least enables you to receive calls in your car that are made to your Android phone, and also phone out using the Tesco phone SIM where necessary.

You can go one step further. I suspect that your contacts are held on your Android phone rather than the SIM? It depends how you set the phone up. If so, what you could do is copy them all to the SIM in the Android phone (There's often a facility in the phone to do this). Of course, if your contacts are already on your SIM this makes the previous step redundant. Now you have a SIM with all your contacts. Then put that SIM in the car phone. Then do the reverse and copy all the contacts from your SIM in the car phone to the car phone itself. Now put the SIMs back in their respective phones. You will now have a car phone that holds all your contacts! There might be a limit of 100 or 250?

Just a note of caution. My first trip in the car, I spent 3 hours on a journey with stops thinking that the text facility was working, then not working, then working again, then not working. It was only when I got home and bothered reading the book that I realised that it (rightly) disables the text facility as soon as the car starts to move!

Also remember to take off the divert when you get to the end of your journey!

Cheers

You have the right ideas, Paul.

Android call forwarding is not working so I`ll go into the EE shop tomorrow and see what they can do. They might also copy the phone book from the Android to the Tesco SIM as they have done this type of action for me previously.

I`ll get the whole thing working properly soon. Not far off now. At least it can be used.

Mike (& others),

This is an OLD thread so I'm not sure if you ever moved on from the divert to a PAYG sim solution or not, but at the weekend I did....

As per you're comments I too had used a PAYG sim in the Motorola phoned in the centre console and then diverted my iPhone (and my Co Motorola Moto G5) to the PAYG sim.
This worked perfectly, by phone handset or handsfree, but I couldn't call out from the car unless I used the PAYG sim.
This had 2 issues;

A) it was expensive to keep topping up the PAYG sim (especially given I have unlimited calls included in the tariff on my iPhone)
B) If I did call anybody the PAYG sim number was displayed and anybody calling back called the Jag not my iPhone (fine if you were still in the car).

Anyway at the weekend I spent <15 mins converting my GSM setup to Bluetooth.

The parts I used were;

Jaguar Bluetooth module 7W93-10D893-AA (approx £100+)
Jaguar X-Type Bluetooth antennae 9x43-19C024-AA (approx £20+)

Both are available on eBay and probably other auction sites :-)

Setup is simple.
Remove the n/s carpet liner in the boot
Unbolt the framework holding the Satnav DVD & CDC (be careful of the wiring pinned to the front) and tip onto its front
disconnect two of the 3 cables connected from the rear of the bottom alloy module in the stack (MOTOROLA GSM unit), leave the 3rd 'GSM aerial' cable connected.
Plug the two cables into the new Bluetooth module, and then connect the new X-type antennae as well.
You could create a specific mount kit for the bluetooth module (its slightly smaller than the Motorola unit) or do as I did, simply mount this on top of the Motorola unit with a piece of Duck tape. The bluetooth antennae has a very short cable, so i simply Duck taped that on top of the bluetooth module.

Note: - I did not disconnect the battery, (I didn't want to have to reset stuff) and all was fine for me.

Back in the cabin I turned on the car and the touch screen displayed DISCOVER ME.
switched on Bluetooth on my iPhone and it did take little while (maybe moving closer to the antennae might've sped things up) but after a minute or so JAGUAR appear as a Bluetooth device.
Selected JAGUAR and the Pairing code was 1313 (I googled that info).
Phone connected and was asked if I wished to download the address book, which i did.
Switched car on/off a few times and 'hey presto' my iPhone 6 connects immediately.
refitted the carpet and job done.

Testing
I've both made and received calls and the quality has been every bit as good as the original Motorola unit (which is still in place but now defunct). I've used my iPhone 6 and the company moto G5.
Maybe getting an antennae with a longer lead and fitting under the parcel shelf or indeed further into the cabin "might" be better, but I have no issues with the phones connecting so far.
You can also download your contacts list (when you pair), so all names/numbers are on the touch screen :-)

NOTES:
This is only a 'proven solution' for those of you with a Motorola GSM Mobile phone fitted in the centre console (which you already know works with a sim card and you've checked works with the touch screen and in built mic).

Apparently the Bluetooth module I have is the 'later one' which allows you to pair unto 5 phones, only one will connect at any time, but its not hard to switch phones. - I don't know the p/n of the 'older' unit.

Looking on eBay I see lots of 7G9N-10D893-AA (reportedly this fits a Freelander 2, Volvo V70/S80 and poss Jag XF). I DO NOT KNOW if this will work in the X350, so I'd focus on the 7W93-10D893-AA, which I know DOES work.

If you're happy with the PAYG divert solution then carry on, but this does 'update' the car somewhat, and of course can be quickly removed to restore the originality.

Cheers
Carl
