I had a spinal decompression to relieve a trapped sciatic nerve in October 2014. Sadly not worked so fully understand the reluctance to get in there too deep and too long.
Really you just need to remove the clutter behind the rad and in front of the engine to be able to get your arms down to crank pulley level and to be able to swing the ratchet thankfully from above top engine level.
Perhaps a few hoses have to come off. Regret not that familiar with the precise details of the X350 but it is not that much different from a V8 S-type. I recall the throttle body and the trunking to the air filter perhaps also needs to be removed. Jubilee clips and snap fixings on the air box. All reasonable easy stuff.
