Engine rumble

Postby sotheran57441 » Mon Mar 01, 2021 8:42 pm

Hi, My 2007 x350 TDVi has recently developed an engine rumble. It seems to emanate from the induction system. The noise is more apparent seemingly through the air cleaner box and does not sound mechanical. Acceleration is sluggish, kick-down is reluctant and fuel consumption low. The car was on SORN for a long time during the lock down period and as a result of my starting and warming it up periodically the diesel filters became a little blocked up. I have taken it on a couple of long fast runs to clear it and it seems to have (nearly) done the trick. I think it needs another fast run or two but I am reluctant to do this while it is 'unwell'. Any ideas on what the problem may be and any recommendations for none dealer Jaguar mechanics within striking distance of Rotherham? Thanks in anticipation. David

David,

Based on your comments about the noise appearing to come from the airbox, I would start by taking out the air filter and examining it carefully along with the box trunking etc. Mice and rodent love air filters and the boxes!

Good luck

Thanks for that Paul, but I have recently renewed the air filter (not for the noise reason) and have checked it since the noise started. It is in almost new condition. I did find it particularly difficult to put the filter in the box, is there an easy way? It may be that the filter is vibrating or something, if that is possible! David

Hi David I had a similar problem noise wise with my 2.7 S Type and it was the air filter box that I hadn't clipped down correctly, but it wasn't down on power etc. Do you have any warning lights on MIL for instance. I once had a clogged up manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) that I replaced but that wasn't making the noise you mention. I could be a number of things. After checking the air box for correct fitment I would take it to a Independent Jag specialist for a scan.

Good Luck.

Thanks for that Jeff. There are no warning lights and I have checked that the filter and box are in situ. I am going to clean the sensor next but have also decided to take it to a specialist to get it checked out. With my limited knowledge on modern cars I could be fumbling in the dark forever. I trained as a mechanic a long time ago but that was when you could fix cars easily!! David

Absolutely David I couldn't agree more, I'm an ex time served mechanic myself. Have you thought about buying a icarsoft scanner they are very easy to use and will point you in the right direction if not identifying the problem to the exact sensor etc which was how I ended up changing the MAP sensor. It will also clear any fault codes you may have.

David,

If you're not sure about making the financial commitment yet to an icarsoft scanner or similar, there are some very cheap ways that you can get some OBDII diagnostic functionality.

I use a bluetooth OBDII dongle and an app on my Android phone called TorquePro. Total cost is less than £10. There are similar apps for iPhone users.

I can't read all the sub-systems on cars but I can read the engine ecu error codes and clear them etc. I can also read real-time info on many of the engine components, revs, temp, voltage, fuel ratio, fuel trims, lambda sensor readings etc.

Invaluable little piece of kit. I use it every week to scan neighbours and friends cars, if not my own!

Just a thought, if you want a cheaper entry into the world of car diagnostics.

David
The scanner I had was an i930 have a look on the S Type forum there's related topics there. Paul's advice is also worth considering, which ever rout you chose would be a lot cheaper than than going to a Jaguar outlet, Not that there's anything wrong with them they have overheads etc to pay for like any business.

Have a look on ebay etc you sometimes get second hand ones for sale, I sold mine for £40.00 to the chap who bought my car. I have a Mercedes now and one of the first things I did was buy a icarsoft scanner.
