Engine number de-code.

Being curious about the engine number on my X350R having spent a bit of time reading the link below, I decided to find out more. PTJS1 also has something of a handle on this topic having done a similar exercise on his XJS.

Taking my engine number as an example, it can be found on the V5c registration document. In my case it reads 04 03 10 0927 TB. These later 4.2 units appear to use the American date system of YY/MM/DD rather than the traditional DD/MM/YY which appears to be the norm with the earlier 4.0 units.

0403100927TB means the engine was built on the 10th March 2004 at 09.27am. TB indicates that the engine is supercharged. The V5c states the complete new XJR was then first registered in the UK on the 28th April 2004.

Mike,

The date system used on the engine yy/mm/dd is not an americanism. It's standard convention to enable numerical sorting based on dates. The same convention was used on the 4.0 engines which enables us to see when steel liners were first introduced.

If one used dd/mm/yy then the engines would not appear to have been built in numerical sorting order.

Mike,

Hmmm.. an engine built first thing in the morning? Let's hope they had their 3 shredded wheat and an espresso to wake them up and concentrate!
