Limp home mode - Throttle position sensor

A friend of mine with a 2003 3.5 V8 XJ has a problem where it goes into "restricted performance" mode. He says the message is "Throttle Position Sensor" fault - I'm not sure if that's from the information message on the dashboard or feedback from the non-dealer garage he asked to look at it. Is this a common known issue? (I expect my Diesel has different plumbing...)

If he can wait, I'll bring down my Foxwell scanner and plug it into his ODB socket and find out what's actually been detected. I'm only asking in the absence of this info 'cos I said I would! A search for the problem on the Internet throws up a range of problems and solutions varying from the exotic to the use of heavy implements

Petrol X350s / 358s don't suffer from any common problems, but of course anything can go wrong. My first port of call when something new manifests itself is battery condition, which on any vehicle with modern sophisticated electronics is critical.

The message is similar to the one I had recently which was a faulty injector so best to read the code to identify the actual cause.
