EGR valve

Just paid almost 900 pounds for 2 replacement EGR valves, as my 2009 XF had lost power and was showing the engine management symbol on the dash.The next day i found a mobile firm who clean the valves for half the price,i'm not sure about JEC's policy regarding advertising so i won't post the name of the company but a simple Google search will find them.Needless to say i wish i'd done more research,i would've saved myself 400 quid.On a positive note it has made a great difference to the performance of my XF.

Sorry to hear that you just found the cleaning options after having the EGR replaced. For the future a quick search on this site would have identified EGR issues and cleaning options with lots of advice.

I have a 2013 XF 2.2D
I firmly believe the EGR valve should be serviced and maintained as part of an annual service.
This part gets clogged up/ gummed up over time, and will simply fail and have to be replaced.

On the forum, I have seen that some owners get their EGRs cleaned, and save themselves money in the process. Why on earth is this not part of the service schedule?
Why is there no indication of when it is getting clogged up? eg warning light illuminating.

As a diesel newbie, I have never had any issues with cars before.
