XF Flat battery

Postby Atlantean » Thu May 16, 2013 4:23 pm

I parked my XF at home unlocked in a secure locked garage. I did not use the car for 2 days.
When I came to start it the battery was totally flat. Called Jaguar assist who came out within the hour and confirmed the battery was totally flat. According to the technician, as I had not locked the car and armed the alarm system the car had not totally gone to sleep. As such all the sensors were active and draining the battery. Moral of the story is always lock and arm your XF to avoid a flat battery if you are going to leave it for a little while.

It is very interesting to read what you have to say. Certainly during the early days of the S type many owners complained of the same problem as you describe. In recent times I have not seen this issue raise it's ugly head. I am only guessing (cos books are not as readily available as they once were) that there is little difference between the XF and S type wiring system.

If there is any validity to my guess work then I would suggest the visiting Technician gave you inaccurate information

I have owned my S type from new and for many years and it is parked in a secure garage with the hand brake off and the car unlocked. It is often not used for well over a week and not once have I suffered the problem you suggest.

Shortly after purchase I had a few issues to resolve, at the time I was not amused. The absolute rubbish that I was fed at the time was quite unbelievable. Fortunately I was in a position to refute their claims and eventually resolved all of the issues.

I would suggest there is an electrical problem that needs to be resolved.

PS It would be wonderful to get a swarm of comments from other XF owners with their experiences !

As I am retired, I do not use my cars every day and they often stand for several days or longer at a time. My XF and XK are kept in a locked garage (including during the last two winters when the XK was used even more sparingly). I always lock them and have never used a battery charger on either car. The same comment applies to my previous S-type.

An earlier XKR convertible was kept unlocked and the battery continually failed me during the winter months, even a replacement battery let me down. I was advised to lock the car and have done so ever since.

I can only speak from personal experience.

David,
You obviously have considerable experience with current models and one has to accept your findings.

I wonder if other members will add their experiences!

On a recent trip to Portsmouth in the XF (2.2 diesel) we achieved an indicated 58 MPG. Traffic was relatively light, we did not use cruise control and used supermarket fuel. The return journey when traffic was a nightmare and we crawled along the A34 and were diverted, was less economical.
