Hello,
I have a problem with set up timing marks for ignition. On this sitehttps://xks.com/files/Jaguar%20Technical%20Information/Specifications-and-Tune-Up-Data-Early-Sedans.pdf I found that should be 4 degrees before dead point for mark ix but the car is working not propertly. Can you help me with this?

Re: Mk IX timing marks
Hi, I am not sure what the timing should be for your car but my 3.8 runs quite well with a large variation in timing, just not perfect at the wrong one! I would have thought your car should be ok at the level you specify but need tuning when running.
What exactly are your symptoms of 'not working'?
Is this the timing on tick-over? What is it at say 3000rpm?
Where is the timing mark you are checking and is it the standard distributor?
Regards,

Re: Mk IX timing marks
When the timing marks are set up on 4 degrees, there is a problem with adding rpm suddenly, it means when I am pressing gas pedal fast the engine have no streangth

I was wondering if I had good connection in dome ingnition. I know that fire order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 but in my car 1 cylinder is on the front it means near the radiator. Is it ok? The second movie https://youtu.be/G_PR4er8B9U

Could'nt quite make out from your video the firing error you refer to
But your oil pressure is too high for 3500rpm blips going up to 60psi -- you may have a crankcase breather gauze blockage -- worth checking? Did mine on "Kerry" (which I regret selling) and it was much more in line with 40 - 45psi.
Mind you, it only had 54k miles up. Should'nt have sold it
Good luck

Remove dome at the top front between the two crankshaft coverscrankcase breather gauze blockage-where is it?
There's a pipe that goes down to the crank case. My pipe was full of gunk too
New gauze needed or clean existing in petrol

If you've got the original distributor then check your contact breaker contacts are not burned.
New points' gap: .014" to .016" (.36 to .41 mm)
Firing order: 1, 5, 3, 6, 2, 4
Timing: 8:1 compression 4°, 9:1 compression 5° BTDC
Plug gap: .025" (.64mm)
Hope that helps?

Yes, that's the domeCrankcase breather gauze blockage-is it this?https://ibb.co/fnczFe
Can't see the carbs because of the flat tin air cleaners used in that pix.By the way, in mar car I have carbs like thishttps://ibb.co/kKOjgK
But your coil looks corroded from its top in that pix
Always worth a swap out if you don't know its age as the secondary windings can go short internally and coil produces less volts and so less spark

Ok. There is a screw there. Should be connected to something or not? Nothing is inside-see the picture https://ibb.co/e0Dyae. Maybe the the oil sensor is broken..

Re: Mk IX timing marks
There should be a gauze inside the dome there to stop the positive crankcase pressure fumes that can carry bits of oil and other dust from entering the combusion path. Is there any blue smoke from exhaust on rev up? You've cleaned the dome now so can't tell what its condition was when removed. And how was the pipe?Ok. There is a screw there. Put a meggar on each spark plug to check for plug insulation breakdown too when plug lead is removed
A 600V meggar would be sufficient
Lots of that engine bay isn't OEM. So can't fully compare with my experience
Let us know how you get on?

Re: Mk IX timing marks
I replaced the clock counter with oil and water from another car. Now is ok. There is no more than 45 psi. I also check the ignition and now is 3-4 degrees before dead point. Next thing was carburators-I synchronized two carbs Weber 32/36 DGAV with carburetor synchronizer. Now is much better. But my carbs are old so it cant be ideally:)

Re: Mk IX timing marks
I have one more question. I would like to buy new carbs. I was wondering which one is better for my 3.8 engine. 32/36 DGAV DGEV DGV?
Re: Mk IX timing marks
I swear by SU's which are so suited to this engine. I used Webers on a Ford I had and it took ages to get them working right. Sorry not much help!
Hope it goes well.
Regards,
