Mk IX Speedo

Postby richard582 » Wed May 01, 2024 5:57 pm

Restoring a 1961 Mk IX that's got a Daimler 420G 4.4L engine in it replacing the 3.8L that was original. Engine sounds sweet, and have replaced the rev counter with one that takes the pulses from the IGN coil (its got a 1-2-3 Ignition system)

But what changes do I have to make to get the Speedo to work? I don't even know where the road speed's measured from. Is it from the gearbox? If so, then I'm OK as I had the gearbox re-built by Rogers, at Holmfield Garage 8)

This restore's been delayed by Covid workshop shutdown by two years, so can't remember!

Completed Restore: '73 Owen Sedanca 4.2L (XJ6 ser 1 base)
Still being re-built: '61 Mark IX with 4.2L

Hello Richard,
normally at the end of the gearbox extension, adjacent to the cross member mounting. I would expect that the drive cable is still in place?

Hi Alec... Thanks for your quick reply. I seem to remember a cream coloured cable with a thick inner in it and a sprung outer in the parts box. Perhaps that's the speedo cable? Here is pix of the instrument panel front and rear.Image[/img]
