Squeak

Has anyone had the same issue, my 1999 XJR gets a high pitched squeak when it starts from cold, but only when its been raining and once warm the noise goes.
Its not the same noise you get when a water pump is about to die and it goes even when cold when the revs are lifted just above idle speed, only to return until the car has reached a good temperature, or gone around 3 miles.
It does not appear when there has been no rain!
Its in daily use so lives on the drive, I cannot identify a specific location it may come from, but have been advised that it may be a belt or a bearing on something like a pulley, any Ideas anyone? or have I developed a mouse infestation!!

Hi,
This question belongs on the X308 section of the bulletin board rather than among the series XJ cars so you may not get too many replies. Nonetheless, this type of noise isn't unknown on the V8 cars. The culprit may be the serpentine belt on the front of the engine. These can produce odd noises either from damage or after a dousing in antifreeze from a leaking/burst hose. If the belt hasn't been changed for a long time, it's best also to change the tensioner at the same time as these can make noises too. Mike.

the noise will be coming from the automatic tensioner on the serpentine belt ,

this is advised to be changed at 100k miles, but they need changing from 70k miles onwards,

the belt is about £30 , and a pop to fit
the automatic tensioner is £45 from Jag and will take about 20 mins to change

the noise will go
