Mathewson's auction LOT 325

What do people think of the Jaguar xj6 4.2 Lot 325. DVLA states no MOT history. it's got less that 28,000 on the clock as well.

Looks like a nice low mileage example of an early Series 3. Looks like there’s a bit of sagging on the headlining and the engine bay obviously needs a good clean up. According to the DVLA it hasn’t been taxed since 1988 so I wonder where it’s been since then? Mathewsons may have more information about that of course. The online MOT information only goes back to 2006 so anything before that would be on paper.

Assuming it hasn’t been used in years a full recommissioning service would be needed, fluids, hoses, belts, brakes, etc. Internal corrosion might be a worry if the coolant/anti freeze hasn’t been changed in all those years.

It looks good on the photos and video but there’s no substitute for a thorough personal inspection of course.

we are driving up tomorrow to have a good look. Yes I will pay particular attention to the cooling system . I am expecting to have to recommission the car and will try and find out more about it's history. If the body work is as good as it looks I may have a bid.

Hi Paul,
It certainly looks in good shape from the photo's but as Ray says you can't really tell until you've seen it up close.
I wonder how much of an inspection you are allowed to do,I don't suppose they would put it on a ramp for you or anything like that.
I would think the underneath would be the place I'd want to inspect the most.

also, just to confuse me even further a Daimler 4.2 lot 469 has now arrived. Big mileage though, 134,000
MOT history shows a fair bit of welding has been done.

While the Daimler is newer and will have some nice extra features, I think the amount of serious body rot that’s had to be attended to would worry me. What’s the next point to go?

Having said that, as the Jaguar hasn’t been MOT inspected for many years there could be problems lurking. Though, depending on how it’s been stored, the low mileage should offer some hope that serious rot hasn’t set in. The higher mileage on the Daimler shouldn’t be a problem as long as it’s been serviced regularly, and properly.

Another thing to be aware of with the Jag is rust in the fuel tanks after such little use.

Mine was very low mileage and little used when I got it, a week in I had a fuel delivery problem which turned out to be a blockage due to a build up of rust in the tanks. The cure was two new tanks along with a new return valve, gauge sender unit, filter and a breather pipe that had to be made up. Not cheap!

Difficult to check for though unfortunately, especially at an auction. You only get a very limited view through the tank fillers.

I checked out both vehicle's and wasn't over impressed. The red Jaguar had had a lot of paint repairs for such low mileage. The rear valance had been sprayed recently with overspray on the exhaust tailpipes. The boot floor also had fresh underseal on it.
The blue Daimler was not brilliant either, the exhaust manifold was blowing , chrome was pitted and generally poor.

Well, the red one sold so someone though it was worth it! I'm thinking again about the blue Daimler 4.2 series 3, lot 107 in the December auction. It's worth £4000 I would say. Is it worth buying and squirrelling away for a rainy day and a later restoration. Surely these cars will only go up in value?

If you are fortunate enough to be able to store it dry then I would say yes, but then again lots of issues develop if a car not used for a long time.

Yes indeed, It's almost better to buy a complete restoration job and assuming everything needs overhauling.
