XJ S2 Sealed Beam Head lamp

Postby LJR » Wed Sep 07, 2016 3:16 pm

One of my inner 5.75" sealed beam light units has failed. I have swapped it over with the other working one to make sure it isn't the wiring. Finding another sealed beam light appears to be impossible (unless anyone can suggest where to find one) although the easiest solution. I rarely drive the car at night or even dusk so don't really need to convert to Halogen but this appears to be my only option. Can anyone tell me:
1. what model Halogen light would have originally been optional (Daimler Double Six Coupe)
2. what wiring modifications would be required
3. recommend a supplier given the multitude of offerings that appear to be out there. (original of aftermarket)

Hi, have you tried Staffurd Vehicle Components Ltd ? (http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/). They do manufacture lights and may be able to help.

The optional inner halogen lamps are also getting more difficult to find these days. They were, unsurprisingly, made by Lucas and were convex faced with the word 'HALOGEN' stamped in the centre in white lettering inside an ovalish ring. No wiring changes were necessary. Mike.

Yes, Les has one of most things! Knowing that LJR lives somewhat further south than we do, it's probably not quite so convenient for him to collect a sealed beam unit from Jagcats. Mike.

I managed to source a pair of 5 3/4 NOS and a pair of good used 7in sealed beams from Collector Car Parts near Heathrow. However, am still on the lookout for original Halogens.

Mike, in the parts catalogues the diagram for the halogen headlights shows 'Lucas European' being the emblem on the glass face inside an arrow pointing downwards. I've seen some of these for sale. Do you recall them ever being a period fitment or was it always the Halogen white oval?

Hi Lucas,
The 'Lucas European' marking only appears in my parts book as the type of lamp supplied to countries (except N America) which took neither the sealed beam nor the halogen units, in other words they were the good old-fashioned bulb variety not used in the UK by that time. Rather like writing 'fuel injection' on the rear of series 2 cars, 'halogen' was one of the latest things in motoring allowing Jaguar to proclaim its technical modernity so it's not surprising to see it plastered across the optional lamps. The fad soon ran out of steam and series 3 halogen lamps were different again. Mike.

Old sealed beams whether New Old Stock or Secondhand can be a problem. The filament can oxidise causing white smoke to fill the light and render them useless. It may be caused by a seal deteriorating over time and allowing air to get in. We used to test them when we put them on the shelf and again at point of sale and a lot would fail at the later date. For info I've no longer got any left.
