1977 Daimler Double Six Coupe

Postby jthorne » Thu Jul 21, 2011 3:31 pm

Hi,

I just got my car, and wondered if you could tell me the following:

Where do i source the rear window rubbers?

I have a loud hissing sound coming from near the battery when the car is running- any ideas as to the cause?

Cheers

Hi Jon,
Lovely rare car you have, there are lots of suppliers for the rubbers, I am in Canada, but I have got rubbers from the UK before as with the exchange rate these days, it's cheaper to source from home. I have used SC parts, but that was a few years ago, and they have got dear, but there will be plenty of people to reply to your post, I'm sure. I just wanted to say hi!

Hi Jon,

Great car! It's up high on my list of beautiful under-rated Jaguars!

As with Phil, hopefully some fellow members will offer you some thoughts on your questions.

Remember that we have paid advisers in the club who can take telephone or email enquiries but they won't necessarily be looking at the Bulletin Board. If you go to the appropriate Model Forum pages and then look at the Contacts page, you could contact David Marks or Keith Parrington whom, I'm sure, will be able to help you.

Screen seals (BD38361) can be had from the independants (if you are in the UK?) Barratts, Manners, Robey to name but three.

Assuming yours is a RH drive car with the battery on the left? A noise on a V12 in that location could be a vacuum leak or a hose on the induction system. Two small hoses go through the bulkhead at that point to supply the climate control system with vacuum, but there are lots of other possibilities.

Does it still have the battery box with the external fan?

Hi

Thanks for all your reply's. Both the rear side windows need the rubber strip at the base- i'll get on to those companies and see what i can do.

My car has the battery box but it's not in use as i couldn't find a battery to fit and anyway the fan is not working. I think it could be a mixture of both these things. The main centre vent does not open even though it does allow hot air out as it's supposed to, it does however "close" with the a/c on. The other day the revs dropped at idle to about 500rpm so it kept stalling, whilst re setting the EAV to 750rpm the noise lessened/stopped so maybe a hose is loose or has a split.

Really good to have this after so many years of other Jags- as you say it's always been right up there on my list. Other Jags have included:

Series 3 4.2
Series 3 4.2 Sov
Series 3 Daimler Double Six
XJ40 4.0 Sov x2
XJS 6.0 FHC
XJS 6.0 Conv
Daimler Double Six Coupe Silver (too far gone for me....)

And this one.

At last!!!!!!!

Sorry, misunderstood the part. Barratts supplied me the rubber strip a while ago as part number BD46440/3. It's also available from Jaguar Classic parts.

Spot on advice here from Al - sorry, I am little late here!
Great car you have there Jon.
Very much in demand - we are seeing so many Coupes coming through the workshop now, with restoration rather than repair being requested :-)

Kind regards,
Keith

Thanks for your help, have ordered the two strips and will have a good look at the vacuum hoses at the same time.

Cheers

Oh Dear

Been out today and the car started miss firing badly, cutting out and got very hot. There seems to be a flat spot between about 1200-1700rpm then it clears its throat and is fine.

Also noticed the aux engine fan only comes on when the heater is on- is this normal?

Have put in dry fuel (although both tanks have been drained and cleaned/renewed) and injector cleaner.

Any suggestions?

Hmmm, tricky one.
A V12 that gets very hot is not good. The cutting out could be fuel starvation. Is the A/C plumbed in and working? The fuel supply is cooled by the A/C - if this is not working and you are running hot - the fuel will vapourise.
Any water leaks?
Enough water??
Heater working??
I would strongly advise getting this sorted out before you use the car much more. A hot V12 is a very expensive V12 :-(

Kind regards,
Keith

Mmm sounds like fuel vaporisation then. The a/c is plumbed in but needs a top up of gas- the clutch on the compressor does engage so there is some pressure/fluid. If it's running lean it would run hot no?

All the coolant was flushed and changed recently and I can't see any water leaks and there is no steam from the exhaust. The heater works fine both hot and cold so there is water in the system. I will check it when its cold next time i'm at the car.

I wondered if it might be the fuel pump as it's noisy on one tank when hot, or perhaps the main engine fan although it looks like its running maybe the coupling's failed so there's no gripping of the air by the blades and therefore no pushing of the air round the engine. As i say the aux fan doesn't come on unless the heater fan is on.

The car ran fine through 2hrs of central London traffic the other day so it's definitely recent!!

Could anyone tell me of the part numbers of the 3/4 air hoses near the battery box on this car? Just in case that's causing it to run lean and overheat? Also the part number for the fuel pump?

Will get cracking asap!

Cheers

Hi John,

The fuel pump should be CAC2026, the hose you would have to check with the supplier. Speak to Zareef at SNG Barratt (01746 765432) tell him I sent you :-)

Cheers,
Keith
