I just scanned through some old threads for the sake of curiosity and was horrified to see that the OP planned to give up and buy an AUDI A6 2.7TDi; one of the most troublesome, expensive to repair cars currently available. How did that work out? I wonder.
Mods edit. Sorry chaps but to preserve the Tech content of the original 'Cabin Heater' Thread, I moved your posts to here...Doug.

Hello 3.8etypephil
I bought an XF a 3.0D Premium Luxury with all the bells and whistles, nice car with jiggly ride (19 inch Low profile tyres, I should have known). A bit worried about it though, done 73K and nothing has gone wrong with it yet.

Well done, that was a near miss. The XF probably won't go wrong, provided you don't use it for short journeys when the usual diesel troubles will manifest themselves; there are plenty around, diesel and petrol, well on their way to 300,000 miles.
We are on our second XF, all that seems to go wrong with them is the nearside rear door latch, on both at around 50,000 miles, so you're safely past that one.
I am surprised that you find the 19"s jiggly; what tyres do you have? Our previous XF, also a PL (4.2 V8) had them and rode well on Bridgestones.
Both current cars are on 20"s and although firmer, are much better than the M5 I had a while ago, which actually hurt my back at times.

Re: Cabin Heater
Hello 3-8etypephil
The car originally came with Pirelli's (OE),245/40/19, and when part worn became even more jittery and losing grip, I changed them to Avon with a marked improvement although still jittery. I am comparing the ride with my previous S-Types 3.0 L 1999. 134K, Petrol, and 2.7d, 2005, 164K, 235/50/17, which I still have and prefer.
I didn't let it go simply because of the derisory trade in I was offered against the XF, and glad I kept it. I think, as with the likes of BMW,Audi,Mercedes etc, the design fashion these days is for firmer rides and a more sporting road holding ,encouraged by the motoring press who always write about the ideal driving roads where cars can be stretched. Smooth rides are a little old hat engendering "lean" in corners at the higher speeds most of don't indulge in, Gentleman's Carriages Compromise is always in end of course. My ideal would be the drive train in the XF with the ride in the S-Type plus a little less "Price Engineering" to improve component quality.

Re: Cabin Heater
Hello Dave,
I suspect that you'd probably enjoy an X350/358 XJ 3.0 or 4.2. A proper gentleman's carriage, with all the little niceties (safety lights on the doors etc) that went missing as the S type transformed into the XF, plus aluminium construction, more space, a few more gadgets, more user friendly touchscreen, serene progress at almost any pace; the whole car feels classy and well built.. Even the XJR is very smooth and refined.

Hello 3.8etypephil
Quite right and coincidentally I have been looking at them and following Mikes progress, I am tempted without doubt and will, more than likely, get one.
